Midland SPCA Destroyed by Fire

Ontario SPCA Midland Branch destroyed by fire; over 30 animals perish

NEWMARKET, ON, (August 3, 2006) — The Ontario SPCA reports with great sadness that its Midland Branch was destroyed in a fire that began around midnight. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed at this time; however, police did report a lightening strike near the shelter at about the time the fire began. Fire crews are still at the scene and are tearing down what little remains of the building, a century farm house, in order to ensure the fire is completely out.

Due to the incredible efforts of Ontario SPCA staff and volunteers 20 cats, six puppies and four adult dogs were saved from the fire. Sadly, approximately 30 cats and a number of rabbits and other small animals were lost in the tragedy.

Three cats, one kitten, two puppies and four adult dogs are at the Heritage Animal Hospital in Midland being treated for smoke inhalation and/or burns. The 17 other surviving cats and four other puppies were taken to the Orillia Branch immediately following the fire but are being transferred today to the York Region facility where a staff veterinarian will be readily available to address any medical concerns that may arise.

With the Midland Branch inoperable, the Ontario SPCA is redirecting the public to the following Ontario SPCA Branch for animal-related services:

Barrie Branch, 91 Patterson Road, Barrie, 705-728-7311;

Muskoka Branch, 4 Ferrier Road, Bracebridge, 705-645-6225;

Orillia Branch, 467 West Street, Orillia, 705-325-1305; and the

Parry Sound Branch, 40 Pine Drive, Parry Sound, 705-746-9291

The Ontario SPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is located on the same property as the Midland Branch but was not damaged by the fire. However, the Centre admits only wildlife and can’t accept domestic animals.
