a walking stick
 

so i was hiking with cash this AM, and i found a sweet walking stick....

i started using it as an extension of my hand to kepe cash 's head even with my legs, and it definitely worked.

i had to remind him often, but he respected the boundary for sure. he tried to walk around it by going far outside of me (hes on a long drag line when we hike) but i was curious to see if it would work so i shortened up on the leash and it def did the trick.

so all the way up the trail was "work" time for him, and on the way down i let the line loose and he was allowed to run ahead.

im going to try it in the AM on our neighborhood walk, ill probly use an umbrella or a lacrosse stick.

ill let you know if it helps at all with the leading out in front.

so my dog definitely gets the walking stick thing.

heres what that tells me:

1. the dog respects my boundaries and rules
2. i hadnt set the walking boundary properly at all (:loser:)
3. walking sticks make me feel like a sheep herder

when I had my first dog I was told that you can do that with a long leash.
hold the leash in one hand with a good amount dangling, swing back and forth in front of the dogs face as we walk.

i felt like such a friggin goon walking around with a dowel in my hand this morning.

luckily it was like 545 am so not many people are out.

you would be surprised at what people think.. we have a guy here that walks his dog with a long pole in his hands.. we asked him what it's for.. he said cause he was attacked on one of his walks.. and he feels safer with it.... ok so to each his own..:thumbs up:thumbs up

thats definately true, if its working for you and you pupper, do it! yesterday while i was watching the Dog Whisperer, Caesar put on end of the leash around the dogs tail to hold it up ( this dog was terriefied of [B]everything[/B] and this gave him the dog more confidence and chnaged the way he thought and reacted, point is it doesnt matter what it looks like as long as its working! i might have to give this a try, i mean Enzo walks pretty good most of the time, but sometimes he likes to try me.

Actually, I am thinking about getting a funky cane - or an Irish walking stick -now that I have arthritis. So that could be one reason to give. Actually, I have seen a lot of people carrying around walking sticks, canes, large umbrellas etc. simply as protection in case their dogs are attached while being walked. My guy was attacked last week out of nowhere - huge dog was sitting on porch with his owner - not tethered or gated and came up from behind and was ready to chomp on my pup's neck when my husband managed to grab him and hold in air just in time. But the teeth did touch his fur so I had to give him a complete physical - especially neck area to ensure canines did not penetrate neck or we would have been off to the vet. After this past winter, many people are using canes due to horrendous falls on the ice.

i want a sweet pimp cane.

and i also agree that if it works to do it.

i am certainly going to, but a sweet pimp cane would make me feel way cooler than a 1" dowel that looks like a whoopin stick.

actually, i am going to ask for a sweet hiking stick for my birthday.

Some people train their dog with a [url=http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0027255618938a.shtml]heeling stick[/url]. Google and you will find some training tips using them. Sounds like you might get a good response with your dog.
