Georges' cherry eye

My bulldog puppy has a cherry eye... it popped out suddently on monday night... he was playing outside and came back in with it  We were worried so I went to the vet the next day. She tried to put it back in but Georges didnt like it, he was hurting, so she said that she wasnt be able to do it and that he will need surgery. We're going for it, hopefully it will work and he's going to be castrate at the same time... in the mean time we have to put ointment in his eye twice a day. Should i ask for the vet to verify his other eye? How much should it cost?

a worried mommy

BenMax October 15th, 2008 08:14 AM

Not to worry about the cherry eye. I have had a few dogs that had this. I aswell had the dogs sterilized at the same time so it cuts down on the cost of doing the surgery for the cherry eye since the dog is already under. I do not remember the exact amount but it was under $100.00.

Best to ask the vet how much for both surgeries.

scathach October 15th, 2008 08:19 AM

that's what i did, she's going to call me back with the price. I just wanted to have an idea of what it should cost. i know i shouldnt worry but it just look so ugly that. Did you dog got it removed or just tucked back in?

BenMax October 15th, 2008 08:23 AM

They were removed. Luckily for one of the dogs I adopted him from an excellent no kill shelter on the South Shore of Montreal and they had it removed before I picked him up. Lucky for me this was included with the adoption fee.

Other dogs I have taken in as fosters were equally done by rescue but there is one dog that I had taken from someone who did not want the dog due to the cherry eye. This I payed on my own with the sterilization and then placed the dog once he was ready to go. The total cost was $275.00 (including the sterilization).

scathach October 15th, 2008 08:30 AM

Thanks, it is helpfull!

I don't now if the vet is planning on removed it or just tucking it in... i had to much things to talk about with her (it was our first visit and i was there for an hour...) and i didnt knew about the condition to begin with. I'll ask when she'll call back.

mona_b October 15th, 2008 08:33 AM

Can the vet try again to put it back?Have you called your breeder and talked to him/her?

I have been reading more and more about this, and at times sergery can be prevented. It's also been said that with this breed, you really need to be carefull with "dry eye"

when the vet tried to put it back Georges was clearly hurting. so tried 3 times. The gland is a bit irritaded. She gave me a ointment. Thanks for the vid link. Georges cherry eye is bigger and redder than the one in the vid. So i wouldnt try that myself.

BenMax October 15th, 2008 09:13 AM

I would not try to manipulate it either - leave it to the vet. Good luck and keep us informed.

mona_b October 15th, 2008 09:18 AM

The vid was stating that it can be popped back in.....;)

I would also give the breeder a call.If any of their dogs have had cherry eye, they can explain everything to you.

Because it is red and inflamed,it will cause some pain. The ointment will bring the inflamation down, then I'm sure the vet can "tuck" it back in.:)

As it was stated in one of the links, you need to be careful that the dry eye doesn't occur after surgery especially in this breed.Another reason to talk to the breeder.:)

scathach October 15th, 2008 09:31 AM

hmmm i'm not sure the breeder will be a big help... it was her first time at breeding bulldogs and she told us she probably won't do it again cuz the mommy collapse and she had to be operated... all the 9 puppies were bottle fed... she kept a female for her...

Great, a BYB........:wall::wall::wall:

This breed doesn't give birth naturally. They have to have a C-Section.Hopefully she gets the mom fixed AND the female she kept.I take it she didn't have any health/genetics testing done? And I don't mean by her vet.

Well I hope George grows up to be a happy healthy dog.:)

Good luck with the cherry eye.:)

the mom was alright when we took Georges, but no more puppies for her. I know we should have go for a breeder with experience but we fell in love with the lil devil ;) we knew that bulldogs werent a no problem breed... but my boyfriend wanted one and well he is the sweetest puppy, all cuddly and incredebly social.

:cry:It's back

kandy October 30th, 2008 12:40 PM

I'm sorry the cherry eye is back. :( Maybe the drops allowed the swelling to go down and then once they were gone it swelled back up?

He is a darling lil guy! Love the wrinkles! Along with keeping the wrinkles around his mouth clean, you also need to keep the wrinkles on his head clean too - my son has a SharPei and I noticed that if the wrinkles got dirt in there, it caused a slight skin irritation if not cleaned regularly.

We had a transport one time who had a Cherry Eye. I'd never seen it personally until that time. It shocked the crap out of me when I picked him up from the airport and took him out of his crate. I thought something bad had happened to him. But it turns out that his eye was fine most of the time but when it acted up it was due mainly to stress. The vets didn't think it was bad enough to do surgery or anything on it. Poor little guy was stressed obviously from his flight. He is now in a really loving home and I don't think his eye pops out much anymore.

P.S. Your baby is soooooooooo adorable!

scathach November 5th, 2008 10:09 AM

it's been a week now and he still have it :( we're going to the vet tomorrow for some vaccines so we'll see what she'll say... It doesnt seem to bother him much... it's just really ugly to look at...

I used to have a great dane that had a cherry eye. My vet said that the cause is a weak ligament that allows it to pop out, and she said that sometimes if it's weak on one side the other one will be as well. So she recommended that we wait a bit and see if the other one went too so that if surgery was needed they could both be done at the same time. The other eye was fine and we opted to just leave the cherry eye alone since it wasn't too huge and didn't become inflamed or bother her at all. When we had that dog spayed it was very hard on her, she seemed groggy for days so I didn't want to put he through the stress of another surgery if it wasn't absolutely necessary. Turned out she had Addison's disease and couldn't cope well with stress. Anyhow, fast forward a few years, now my neighbour has a couple of pups she adopted and one of them got cherry eyes that did need to be operated on. Our local vet would have removed them, however another vet my friend knows recommended not having them removed, but put back in and I guess they suture them in some how to keep them from coming back out. He said that taking them out removes the tearduct and then the eyes will always be dry and can't flush out dirt and dust easily.

scathach November 5th, 2008 10:44 AM

i don't know if the vet is planning on removing it or putting in back in... last time i went, it was Georges' first visit so they're was alot of informations and things to go thru and i forgot to ask about it... but i'll do it this time and not being alone there will help... anyway if we go with the surgery we are going to do it at the same time he'll be sterilize... so two for one ;)

scathach November 13th, 2008 08:24 AM

well we went back to the vet last week and she told us that she wouldnt operate him before we go and see a heart specialist cuz Georges has a lil heart murmur. Luckily the specialist were at the local pet hospital. So after some days of worrying we went to see him yesterday. 30 min later, our hearts were as light as our wallet! Georges is all right, no biggie... The kind of murmur he has is often see in breed with short noses! :D I have to say that the Dr. Dubé was great he took time to explain us what the murmur was, the risks (which are none ;) ) and gave us exemples of other dogs that had bigger murmur than Georges and who live happy active live!

So now we are going to be able to get Georges' cherry eye fix!!! :goodvibes:
