tattoo on pet cat

hello, I have a cat I call shasha that I have had for the past five years. The other day I noticed on her belly a tattoo. The tattoo consists of two letters it is either "OT" or "DT". Could some one please explain this to me? I dont know what it is for.

When cats & dogs get spayed the hospital that does that will tattoo the animal for future identification. Vet clinics & hospitals usually tattoo in the ear but some will do on the belly. (Registered show dog breeders tattoos are usually done on the belly also, those are to identify the litter the pup is from.)

Each vet clinic will have a series of letters or letters & numbers to identify which clinic the animal was spayed at. Here in BC Canada the clinics have a designated 2 or 3 letter combination, plus there is a letter for the year the tattoo was done and a number for the individual animal.

This way if the animal is found, the tattoo is checked & looked up then the clinic contacted so they can get in touch with you to reunite you with the lost animal. :)

Welcome to pets.ca when you are able to post pics we would love to see them :D

Did you get your cat as a stray? I am assuming since you did not know that it has a tattoo. Someone could and is probably missing their pet.

As I say to everyone. If you pick up up a stray PLEASE PLEASE...take it to a vets or a spca and have it scanned for a mircochip and or tattoo. Just don't assume that it was dumped, take it in and never question if someone is missing their pet.

I am sure someone or a family is missing this pet.

re:question on cat

her previous owners had gotten her from the Oklahoma city dog pound and when they did not want her(in their opinion she accomplished what that wanted her for and did not see a reason to keep her afterwards) they gave her to me. They did not know about the tattoo either.

A cat from a dog pound? Was it just a pound or was it specifically for dogs?

What was the reasoning for giving her up? Seems like she is better off with you anyway:)

all they wanted her for was to catch the mice in their house. Once she did that they saw no further use for her and threw her out

I hate people sometimes *UGH* Thanks for taking her in and I hope these people never own another pet again.
