dog treats w/ glucosamine??
 

I would like to make dog treats for my old lab and put glucosamine right in the treat, but I don't know if cooking gluc... would lower the effects of it?? Or if anyone knows of a recipe that doesn't require cooking?

The cooking would elimate the benefits of the glucosamine. I don't feed raw but I'm sure ScottB or Technodoll will have some information for you.

If your dog likes yoghurt or keffir...

You can get liquid orange-flavoured glucosamine which you can easily mix with plain yoghurt or keffir for dessert.

I never thought of that. :o I add plain organic yogurt to my dogs food and put the glucosamine/chondroitin tablet in it and they gobble it right up. :thumbs up

the easiest way to get a full dose of glucosamine in your dog, IMO, is to simply drop the tablet down their throat between two cookies. it slides right down with all the drool :p

Lucky for you Techno you got the Beanie's. And I've got the grrrl's who I can pretty much reach down into their intestines if I really wanted to. But Declan ? Nuh-Uh. This is a dog who has obviously never had a pill, didn't get his ears or teeth etc checked or done. Frankly, I've got more important battles than trying to find a way to get my hand in his mouth.

how about liquid glucosamine? it's like a syrup... 1500mg per tablespoon.

Lately I've been putting his pills in a teaspoon of peanut butter but I was hoping for something more healthy. He gobbles it down but he is getting major build up on his teeth. Oh-my-goodness here I go on teeth again. Do I have teeth issues or what???;)

My lab is the easiest in the world to pill. He gets his third tablet before he goes to bed. I just steal four or five little cat food kibbles from their bowl and put them in a bowl with the tablet and whoosh, everything is gone. :D I swear he gobbles the tablet first because it's the biggest. :laughing:

Yeah Rosco just takes his ill with a lil peanut butter on it.

My brother gives glucosamine to his choc lab and while it seems to work - (but he has also had surgery and goes to the vet constantly to make sure he's doing OK). There is a recently released study that shows glucosamine is useless but I don't want to give in yet, lol It is one of the few alternative meds ppl claim works for them and if a patient tells me it helps their pain, who am I to argue - it could be psychological but maybe not? I tried it and it was useless for my very serious joint pain but I don't believe in anecdotal info - I am one person of many.
I actually got in an argument with another doc this am about the study because it was one of those traditional ones that compared glucosamine to a placebo but I prefer a better designed study that compared it to other meds so while it did have a good sampling design, I am not ready to say it does not work yet!

hubby and i have seen a definite improvement in maika's rear legs since she's on glucosamine/chondroitin. i doubt it's psychological in her case :D

Which study( and in which Journal) is that Cyberkitten ? I'd like to look at it myself.

I would say that the gluc.. is definately working in my dogs case. Before I started giving it to him he could hardly make it up our stairs, and he would stumble going down them, he still has a hard time jumping up on my bed though. It has not cured him, but he is better when he is on it.

I made up my own recipe and he likes it. Its kinda like peanut butter balls but without the chocolate and extra sugar.

I put half peanut butter and half rice crispies then add the gluc.. according to how much I made and rolled it into balls and put it in the fridge.

It is so much easier to give him and i see it everytime i open the fridge so i never miss a day.

I split a banana for the dogs after their dinner, it's great to hold pills. They love it!

my Maltese has been on the glosamine/chondroiton pill for 7 years since he tore his cruciate ligaments [both legs] and i think because of the pill he didn't need surgery,the Dr. felt he was healing nicely and today [beside being over weight]he's perfect:)
