Are bananas harmful for rabbits?
Fruits and Treats While hay and vegetables are the basis of a healthy diet, rabbits also enjoy treats. Cartoons and other fictional portrayals of rabbits would lead us to believe that carrots are the basis of a healthy rabbit diet. Many rabbits enjoy carrots, but they are a starchy vegetable and should only be given sparingly as a treat. Other treats your rabbit might enjoy are apples (without stems or seeds), blueberries, papaya, strawberries, pears, peaches, plums, or melon. Extra-sugary fruits like bananas, grapes, and raisins are good too, but should be given on a more limited basis.
|
I tried to give my rabbit bananas but he wouldn't touch them.

I was wondering why "grapes and raisins" are okay to feed rabbits but not dogs? Does anybody know? :o

To Rainbow, Thank you very much for the information. The rabbit became sick and thin and died within two weeks. I was afraid the bananas were the cause. Amron |
A shelter volunteer I know rescued a couple of bunnies, unfortunately she thought they were both male and put them in the same cage, and one was a girl and they had babies. She took good care of the babies, and they were very healthy, but when they were a couple of months old, they started getting sick and dying. the vet couldn't figure it out until she mentioned she had been giving them bananas to eat. The vet said bananas in tiny amounts are ok for adult bunnies, but very bad for bunnies under 6 months.
Of course there are many other things that could have caused your bunny's death. My first bunny I had got a hairball and died from it, even though we tried to treat it. Bunnies can't vomit, so hairballs can be very dangerous for them. Also there are illnesses rabbits can get, they can die from food that is a bit moldy, etc. I'm sorry you lost the bunny. :rip: |

Thank you, Sablecollie,
I hadn't looked on this website for many months. Do you know anything about what to feed guinea pigs besides carrots, apples, lettuce, hay, grass? Seems kind of a boring diet. |
My bunny loved banana but one has to b careful to give your rabbit just a little bit. Don't overwhelm him or her or you could create digestive probs- bunnies have delicate digestive systems so a little bot of banana as a treat is a great idea. Do not use it as a staple. Keep it as a treat - a few pieces of banana. Mine loved bananas and would have eaten a whole one if I had given him one but I did not want him to be sick - because rabbits NEED to eat!

I gave my bunnies a little bit of red-pepper a while ago and they started peeing orange. They seemed to love it - but I'm staying away from the peppers. It doesn't seem right.
They love bananas tho! Can't get enough of them. |
