When out for a walk - first stool is fine, but the following are always runny?
 

as the title says - whenever i take my dog out, his first stool is perfectly fine, but the following ones are always runny. is this something i should be concerned about? just seems really weird... i'm feeding him orijen for large puppies.

Some dogs just seem to loosen up with exercise. How is his stool otherwise, when he's [I]not[/I] exercising?

You might want to try a little pumpkin in his food...it's a good source of fiber and may help stabilize the stool consistency. How big is he?

What colour is the poop?
If its not discoloured I would say some possibilities for the soft poop may be; stress or perhaps his food is too rich. I feed Orijen to my male GSD, always have, I put a fair amount of research into it and from what I have heard it can be far too rich for some dogs.

Also, do not rule out a medical problem like Giardia.

If I was you I would likely take a fecal sample into my vet and get them to run a basic test.

I took his fecal sample to the vet not too long ago: no Giardiasis, but did get medication for roundworms.

I have the same thing happening with Bailey whom I walk every day(not my dog)she'll have a big pile of firm poop,then the next,although not runny,is all mushy,hard to pick up.

This always happened to my dog when he was eating Nutro...I think it's quite normal for the second poop on a walk to be runny. BUT I think it's even better if your dog is only pooping once on a walk in the first place.

When Chase was on Nutro he pooped up to 4 times per walk.....after we switched to Wellness and then to Orijen he started pooping only twice per day. Better food = less poop! :thumbs up

My dog always has this issue, especially if we go somewhere new. He's fine otherwise. I always just chalked it up to the excitement or exercise sometimes just making everything move through a bit faster than normal. As long as it's firm and fine the rest of the time, I've not been worried.

feces absorbs water as it sits in the colon so the first bowel movement is what has been waiting it come out. The second bowel movement would be new feces that has not had time to sit in the colon and absorb as much water hence being runnier. This is quite normal, when I worked in a animal shelter I experienced a fair amount of dog poop, and it is quite common to follow this pattern.

Georges used to do the same thing! Firts poop fine and the second was all runny... and he wasnt even exercising... but now he seems to be okay even though he's still pooping 5-6 times a days :yuck: Seems like he needs to do everything most of the time we are taking him out...can't wait for him to be down to 2 poops a day!

This happens all the time to doggies who are getting lots of exercise. At the park,we call teh loose runny ones "Park Poo" because their leavings at home are normal firm ones. Heck some days we can't even pick up the Park Poo. Ick. It happens to so many dogs that I'd consider it normal. We certainly don't all feed the same thing and it doesn't happen at home. Just when they are excited, running a lot and drinking lots of water.
