Dog is licking his genies

Hello!

I have little problem with my dog and I was wondering if anyone can shed some light.

It started on Tue that my dog started licking his penis..not excesivly but more then usual. Then Wed I come home from work and he is still doing it and I check it, touch it, and he kind gives me a protest...just jerks back a little...then I notice he has little white-yellow pus on the top of his penis and the top of his skin is a bit redish.

I call my vet right away I get an appointment within an hour they look at it and say that it could possibly be either kidney stones or urinary tract infection since there is no visible infection on his penis. They are offering to do X-Rays to see if there are any stones and urinanalysis...now in order to do the x-rays they have to put him to sleep...

I told them I would think about it and let them know what my decision is....

is there anything else they can check before they go to extreme and put him to sleep and do x-rays???? This action seems extreme to me......

What should I do???

I will do what is best for my pet ofcourse, and I am keeping a close eye on him to see if this is getting worse or better. Since this morining - it looks better and no discharge in sight! I took him for a walk last night and he peed normally, Iif he had kidney stones it would hurt to pass urine!

He ate less then usuall last night, but I get this with him a lot! he is eating his treats normally :)

This is a 3 year old Shih-tzu, nutered.

Thank you for your help!

Can you ask for a blood count and urinalysis instead of doing the x-rays right off the bat and see what results are recieved from these tests first?

It's probably going to be in your best interest to have any tests your vet deems neccessary in order to find out what is wrong. Not only to find out what your pup is dealing with, but to rule out anything else.

Thank you for your response!

That is what I asked her but she seemed very agressive about this kidney stones test, she was really pushy and I got a feeling she was not doing it for a dog's well being but for money...it's just the feeling a got! Maybe it's time to change vets :(

I had my mom babysit my dog today while I am at work and she said he hasn't licked himself whole day and there is no white discharge on his penis...she took him for a walk - no diaheria. and he is generally in a good mood.

I think I will wait it out another few days and see if it goes away or gets worse.

I found this thread which sounded similiar to what you saw on your puppy.

If you ever get a feeling that a vet is being too pushy, then definitely find a new vet. You need to trust the person who will essentially be responsible for the healthcare of your beloved animal.

Glad to hear he seems to be feeling better!
