Creepy kitten-mom interaction
 

I'm used to seeing Newt, and her male kitten, Newton, play with each other - their interaction is fairly normal (and often comical) to observe. Now it looks like Newt is in heat, and during their play sessions, Newton (who is 14 weeks old) is trying to 'mount' her mom - a little disturbing to watch. He gets on top of Newt and bites the nape of her neck. What's strange is Newt is allowing him to do this without much of a protest; Newt could kick Newton's butt clear across the next room if she wanted to, so clearly, she is allowing this to happen. This type of behaviour has happened several times in the past couple of weeks.

Now Newt will finally get spayed later this week (yay!), so it will no longer be an issue at that time. I'm just wondering if I should be worried about this behaviour in the meantime? I wouldn't think Newton would be sexually mature yet.

I found a few web sites that said 5-6 months of age is when a male cat can mate.

At 14 weeks he is too young to mate as far as i know but the behavior does indeed seem like it is sexual behavior which is innate.

You might consider spaying newton at the same time as he might be entering puberty very soon.

Newt is at the vet getting spayed today, so that half of the equation should be solved, at least. My vet is saying Newton should be neutered at 5 months - I'll ask about having it done sooner.

If Newt was in heat during this interaction then it is completely normal. Yes, even at 14 weeks. It may continue after they are both fixed as well as some cats just continue the actions even though nothing will occur.
If you are truly disturbed by it may I suggest getting the kitten a large stuffed animal to hump. It may help. Although I would suspect that is going to be the last you'll see of it if Newt is being spayed today.
I would not worry about getting Newton fixed at five months. He will be fine to wait till the original date.
