My mother's kitten jumped out of a window (third floor) when trying to catch a butterfly and broke two legs : the front leg and the rear one. Right now I'm not in Canada, and where I am there are no pet emergencies. Sundays everyone is closed. How can I help the poor kitten?

Tomorrow we'll take the kitten to the vet and try to have X-rays done (if it is possible). I really hope the kitten will be able to walk again...

here is a picture of our kitten. I don't know if we did it right, but we tried to strengthen the leg with a paper and some sticks so it won't move. We couldn't find the place where the rear leg is broken.

OH no,what a terrible situation to be in for this poor beautiful kitten,he of course needed to see a vet yesterday.
If no vet,is there not an animal-shelter that could help him,at least until the vet opens??
I don't know how to treat broken bones,other than an emergency-clinic,but I think you are doing the right thing bandaging it:confused:

OMG and she is a Siamese!! Isn't there a wonderful vet clinic in Mtl open 24 hrs- I have seen it mentioned here. I'll do a search!!!

I know what to do with people fractures but my suggestion f you can't get to a vet till morning is:

Keep her calm so she does not scratch or bite- she will be very scared!

Gently lay the kitty on a board, wooden door, whatever, padded with blankets or towels.
Secure her to the support.
Do not attempt to set the fracture.
If a limb is broken, wrap it in cotton padding, then wrap it again with a magazine, rolled newspaper or a towel and two sticks. The splint should extend one joint above the fracture and one joint below. Secure it with tape and make sure blood flow is not constricted.


You really need to know if the leg is broken first before doing anything but splints would be better. But get her to a vet asap!!

I hppe she'll be OK. She is young so fast action should help her.

I think Vas is from Montreal, but she is not in Montreal right now (I assume from the post she is visiting her mother, somewhere not in Canada).

I wish I could offer advice. All i know is to splint it, but not too tight. enough for the blood to flow freely, but to limit movement until it heals.

Raingirl is right, I'm visiting my mother in Lithuania. Sadly, here are no animal shelters which can help and no working veterinary clinics on weekends. We tried to call many, no response.

We did as someone suggested: we laid the kitten in a box padded with blankets and towels so we can move her from one place to another without touching the kitten. Surprisingly she is very calm. It is a very gentle kitten, even in pain she would never scratch or bite.

One in a while she tries to get out of the box because she needs to go to the litter box. So we put her gently in the litter still holding in our hands so she will not fall. And then, she even tries to cover sand with her broken leg in pain!

Tomorrow morning we are taking the kitten to the clinic. Kitten is only 1 year old, so hopefuly it will recover as soon as possible.

Sometimes, human doctors can be persuaded to help, if they are animal lovers. Possibly could put in a call to an animal clinic that can give information regarding pain medication and dosage requirements. Just a thought. When Corky was 9-10 months old, he jumped from my mom's arms and broke both bones in his front leg. I'll never forget his screaming & crying in pain. It was a Sunday night. The emergency clinic wrapped the leg to stabilize it and gave him an injection for pain and additional pills to keep him comfortable through the night. In the morning, we took him to our regular vet where they did surgery to insert a pin and to put a regular cast on his leg. Because he was still growing, they put him under anesthia twice during the next 8 weeks to Xray and change his cast. Today, 3 yrs later, he doesn't have even a limp. Dogs and cats are remarkable in how rapidly they recover and adapt. I hope this information will help somewhat. Wishing the best for your kitten.

I agree- I wish I was closer. <g> Call the Mtl Children's hospital and see if anyone there can help you.... or the Jewish General or St. Justine's.... or a walk in clinic.... My sister lives on the west island but she is in the Maritimes at the moment. (and she is a lawyer not a doc) but I would try pediatricians first. (Call me biased.... but we are used to treating little ones!)

CK- read the posts! she is in Lithuania right now. There is not much the Mtl hospitals can do for her.

Maybe the human hospitals over there can help?

Just so people know, the DMV is the 24 hour vet here in MTL. They have so many specialists there, with state of the art equipment, but they're a bit expensive.:eek:

And unless they deem it an absolute emergency, they won't provide a pet ambulance, even if you offer your house to pay for it.

My advice re the care remains the same but there ARE pediatricians there - and human docs who may help. When I was with Docs without Borders, we would help pets. (in the unlikely event one made it to a refugee camp)!!

Thx Prin, by George I do believe I have it now - I read right past that - skimming again, lol Was trying to think of that place in Mtl when I saw the Mtl notice. Oh well --- I am tired!! Long weekend. Can I blame it on the chemo? Nahhhhhh - I am just not with it today, lol

Here is the photo of the X-rays we did today. Apparently there is only one leg broken. The operation will be done today. I'm relieved.

Well, it's very hot right now, but I enjoy the beach in Palanga. :)
It's been 4 years in Canada, but I have never met any Lithuanian there so far! Nice to meet you!

The operation for the kitten was a difficult one: the joint was broken into pieces and the vet spent 2 hours collecting them into their place. It's a good sign that our kitty got back her appetite and even tried to use her leg. Now she needs a lots of care and caution and she should be ok.

Kitty is becoming naughty and wants to move a lot! So I had to limit her space in order to protect her leg. It's not good if she's trying to walk too much.

Not when it is surgerical like this, the air has to get at it and it need to drain,

the bones are held together with pins


I hope your kitty has more 8 more lives after the surgery and sure glad one leg, I know the price tag is pretty hefty. she is a pretty lucky kitty to have a mom like you ;)

I confine the kitty only to discourage too much movement for a while to help the heeling.
OntarioGreys is right: the bones are held together with pins and therefore no cast is needed. With pins it heels much faster.

We call our kitty Kulka or in english Bullet, because she's very fast and used to run like a bullet from one room to another.:)
