Puppy With Toe Fracture

My 8 mo old boxer/lab mix fractured his outer far left toe (non-weight bearing) on his rear left foot on month ago. It is just a fracture. We were told to limit activity and give 10 days worth of Rimadyl. Its been one month, but the toe sticks up still. We try to limit his activity, but he will run laps around the dining room table. We cannot crate him because he has really bad separation anxiety. Is it normal to still be sticking slightly up? How long will it take to heal. When can he go back to exercising (ie dog park, long walks). We have a three story house, and its impossible to keep him from using the stairs. He is 60lbs.

It's quite likely mostly healed by now and may actually stick up permanently. Can you go back to the vet for a follow-up exam?

We can go back to the vet, but I'm trying to find a new one. We also have spent so much $$ on this poor puppy (like 3K) because he was extremely ill when we adopted him, I'm trying to make sure I'm not jumping the gun. Thanks for the reply.

I also think it would be better for a check up. Since he was already seen for this by your vet , maybe he won't charge you again ?

The vet should at least give you a 'follow-up' rate on the fee rather than a full office visit charge.

But sugarcatmom might be right - the toe might stick up permanently. My mom's rotti caught her foot in a pipe when she was young, it fractured one of her toes, and that toe stuck up for the rest of her life. It never caused her any problems, although I think she would stub it once in a while jumping onto the couch or the bed.

My understanding is that the inside and outside toes, the non-weight bearing ones, will heal on their own, and exercise is only limited for a few wks. A phone call to your original vet (free) should confirm how long they wanted you to confine him.
