New dog for an old cat

So, my wife and I are moving to Chicago from Vancouver in the next couple months. We have a wonderful, chubby, timid cat named Topaz who is moving with us; but since we are driving across the country with all our stuff and topaz hates driving, we are leaving him with family here in vancouver and then flying him out to meet us.

Here's our dilemma. Once we're moved into our new home in chicago, we plan to get a puppy. Topaz has lived with a dog before, so it won't be a totally new experience, but we still want him to feel as comfortable as possible. We aren't sure if we should (1) wait to get the puppy until topaz is settled in and feels like he owns the place; or (2) if we should get the puppy before we mail topaz, so he doesn't have to go through two readjustment periods (new home and then a new dog...). Any thoughts, suggestions, or anecdotes would be much appreciated!

I'd be inclined to let Topaz get used to the new digs, first, and then look into adding a pup. He'll adjust much easier to the dog if he has all his hidey-holes and safe spots worked out before Puppy gets there...or at least, I would if I were a cat. :o I don't have much kitty experience, though. :D With luck, someone with some kitty savvy will chime in soon!

Welcome to the board, Topaz invador!

Most definitely, I would also say please give Topaz ample time to settle in and feel really comfortable in his new home before introducing another pet.

Welcome to the board. How old is Topaz? We would love to see some pics of him when you get a chance.:D

Yes, allow Topaz time to get settled in before introducing any new pets.

I agree with the others, having done the same thing 2 years ago when I adopted a 5 month old Cocker Spaniel. If possible, install a cat door or use a kid gate to allow Topaz to "run away" for some quiet time when (s)he's had enough of the puppy play. Make sure Topaz has access to food, water and litter well away from the puppy. This will also help in training your puppy as well. You will be able to restrict access to parts of the house that you don't want to have an untrained puppy in.
