Dog has discolored toenails - Answered by Dr. Van Lienden

My Maltese-Poodle, Sophie, has one foot with discolored toenails. I do not know what the cause of this is; nor am i sure what to do about this. Can anyone help?

Are they discolored or different colors? My dog has some "clear" toenails and some black. It's from her mix. If they are discolored, I would take your dog to a vet.

Re:

Thank you for the tip. Her toenails are only discolored on one foot, the rest are clear, which may lead me to believe it is part of her mix. She was just at the vet for a check up and the vet did not mention anything about her toenails.

Thank you for the advice!

Many causes for discolored nails: infection n(bacterial, viral, fungal),frostbite, auto-immune disease, trauma, neoplasia (cancer), and bizarre breed specific diseases.

I would make an appointment with your veterinarian to gather further information about the color change.

Your vet will pursue history, current drug use and diet along with a physical exam and possibly diagnostics to find an answer. There are too many possibilities for me to give you a simple answer.
