pet for an 8yr old boy - tree frog

I hope I'm posting this in the right place, and haven't overlooked a previous thread. If so, do point me in the right direction.

We recently moved to Canada from the UK, and my son had to leave his beloved gerbils behind with a friend. He really misses having a pet of his own - he is a very responsible, sensible boy - so he's been doing some research and has set his heart on having a tree frog.

I know nothing about caring for amphibians - is this realistic, and do those of you who have such pets think it's a suitable pet for a child, and something he'll be able to manage more or less by himself?

Thanks for your thoughts!

This is the coolest habitat for reptiles and I think it would work great for a tree frog.

Your son should be able to take care of a tree frog just fine. Just don't get any amphibians with the word "fire" in it's name. :D They are poisonous!!

I know much more about reptiles than amphibians, but there are several different kinds of tree frogs and they all take varying levels of care, so choose one that doesn't have too many specialized needs.
As long as you and your son have researched and choose a frog that doesn't need more care than you can handle it should be fine. I'm not sure what kind to recommend, since like I said, I know more about reptiles than anything, but many frogs need their tanks kept at an exact temperature, they need specialized foods and a special enviroment to stay happy, whereas others can handle a broader temperature range, a more general diet, and aren't bothered by how their tank is set up  . Some of the more specialized frogs will die or become sick if you make a small error with any of those 3 things.
Bottom line, do lots of research on whatever tree frog he decides on and everything should work out ok.

Thanks both of you. That tank looks great - we'll look out for one like that.

My husband and son are going to a specialist reptile/amphibian store tomorrow, to talk to the staff there, so hopefully they can advise of which type is most suitable.

I'll post back when we buy something - might be useful to someone else.
