We are two seniors flying on WestJet with our 14 year old 5 pound Yorkie in the cabin with us for the first time. He is quite a vocal guy and I am afraid how this trip will go, hoping it is not a sitcom and we are not banned from flying WestJet. LOL Any suggestions on what brand of carrier? I see Sherpa brand but have been unable to locate one in local stores. Has anyone sedated their furry friend for his or her flight? Any suggestions or reassurance from your experience: would be of great help...thanks

There are specific measurements for the crate to fit under the seat, call the airline. Also I heard that sedation amplifies when your elevated, so it's not recommended to give this to your pet, if you must than a lower dose.

Welcome, Codysmommy! I've never flown with my pets, so I have no advice to offer, but I'm sure you'll receive lots of great advice here. Just wanted to stop in and say "hi". :D

Welcome codysmommmy!

I once picked up 2 cats that were sedated for a flight - went off without a hitch if that's any help.

You could also try a more natural approach with flower essences - Rescue Remedy would not sedate him, but keep him calm and relaxed.

Or, if you have access to a reputable herb store (organic), you could try chamomile, it will relax him and might make him sleep too. ;)

Yes I had a Samoyed and I flying from the East coast to the West coast , 3,000 with my dog and I sedated her . The poor dog was so drugged up when we got to California and had trouble walking . When we flew back East for a visit I decided not to sedated and she was OK. I would put thick towel in the dog crate encase he has an accident so pee will not get all over floor on the plane.
