Found Norwegian Elkhound Selkirk Ontario

1 Attachment(s)
This is unfortunately not my Sable. This Norwegian Elkhound was found
Aug. 25,2007 in Selkirk, Ontario (south of Brantford/west of Tillsonburg)
He appears to be purebred but no microchip or tattoo.
He is very friendly and affectionate, well groomed and knows his commands.
He is being transferred from Sheltie Rescue there to me as a foster home until we can find his owners or place him for adoption.

It would be nice if Vets would push the microchipping. I have never had a vet recommend it for my cats but I think when pets are brought in for their final round of shots, microchipping should another routine procedure.

This looks like a well cared for dog, Shirley, and it has found itself in very good hands!
Good luck finding its owners.

Shirley, you know what often happens, you think you lost something, then you go out and by a new one, only to find the lost item again.
Hopefully that will apply to Sable too,not that you bought a new dog...but you'll have one in the house for a while maybe it'll work:pray:

We are suspecting that it is perhaps an American dog that has been up on vacation?? AKC does not require microchipping as CKC does.

I agree. Lets go one step further and suggest that it is made law. Every animal that is brought into a shelter, and claimed by the owner, if the animal is not already chipped, it should be like a citiation. They have x number of days to have animal chipped, if not they are fined.

Don't know how effective it would be...but its nice to dream.

Shirley...he will definitely be in good hands in your care.
Hope you find his owners soon... :fingerscr

Excellent idea ACO22.

Shirley, you got a foster dog!? That's so great.
Yes, maybe it will work to get sable back. I had that discussion too, that if we got another dog, spencer would probably turn up. If we absolutley in no way without a doubt could not find the owners of Teddy (the dog going onto the highway), we were going to keep him...and everyone said if we had to keep him, spencer would return lol.

That's amazing that you can do that though. I don't think I could handle losing a dog, then building an emotional attatchment with another one because I wouldn't want to give him up if he was a foster dog. Good job for you!.

How very generous of you and your DH to take him in Shirley. He looks like an older doggy (or is he just chubby?). Hopefully his guardian is as caring and desperate to have him back as you are Sable.

And Aco22 ~ couldn't agree with you more. I'm convinced the only way Ceili was identified by Animal Services and returned to me was because of her chip. (It's a long story but the short of it is, when I got "the call" they sent me to the wrong dog at the wrong shelter which necessitated alot of sobbing on my part and alot of telephoning on their part).

Can't believe no one is looking for this wonderful dog....He is a real sweetheart, so gentle and obedient.
We almost wonder if he didn't belong to a trucker....he gets in everyone's car that comes and doesn't want to get out.
He likes men! Walks on a leash great.

chico2 September 8th, 2007 03:47 PM

Shirley,is he still at your house???
Not that
he would ever replace Sable, but I am sure this boy will give you some comfort,if he's still with you....
I think you'd be amazed at how many wonderful dogs people just do not care about, but hopefully this one has an owner somewhere..

Shirley ... I don't post often, but I have been thinking just what Chico said. They say people (so pets too) come into our lives for a reason.

The first thing I do when I check in here is to look and see if Sable has been found, and fingers and paws crossed that you are reuinited, but in the meantime, you have found a friend and so has he. Take care.

Pat.

Shirley, I was just discussing that same thought as Chico2 had on Friday with a co-worker. I was saying that animals find their way into people's lives when they are least expecting it. It has happened to me twice in the last year.

Would you consider keeping this sweetie?

the problem with microchipping is there are no set standards,i mean,
lets say my vet uses type a brand of chip, the spca uses type b brand of chip,
the chip scanners are not compatable....brand b scanner won't read brand a chip, and the scanners are too expensive so not many vets or shelters will invest in both.

Winston September 9th, 2007 02:35 PM

Shirley 1011 ...do you know any truckers? maybe if one of them passed the message along to the guys through their CB Radios maybe someone can identify him? you could be so right about him being a truckers dog...I could see me having one as a companion if I did that? worth a shot in case somebody is missing their boy and dont know where he is at?

Looks like a great dog!! So awesome of you to offer to foster when your always looking for Sable!!

That's good to know, would be nice if manufacturers made them compatible.

Yippee...Timber a.k.a Sabre has found his forever home and will be going there next week. Although we have come to love him, it just didn't feel right at this time. The home he is going to is perfect...he will be the only dog and the lady is newly separated and looking for company and someone to go for long walks. I am so happy for him, he deserves a great home where he can be "the top dog". :dog:

chico2 September 19th, 2007 07:11 AM

That great Shirley, good for Timber,I can't help feeling that somehow Sable had something to do with this...oh yeah,I know,I am a bit weird:shrug:

shirley1011 September 19th, 2007 07:40 AM

Chico, no I had that feeling too...like how weird to come from so far away and my name to come from someone in B.C.???
Although I hate to see him go, I know this home will be just wonderful for him. The lady has had experience with Ridgeback rescue and just fell in love with him. They will make a perfect team both needing each other.

SIL September 19th, 2007 08:49 AM

I'm happy to know that Timber has found his forever home.:D

Not sure if I missed something, but I don't understand the BC connection? Can you fill me in Shirley?

shirley1011 September 20th, 2007 12:06 PM

This Nowegian Elkhound was found in Selkirk and turned into a Sheltie Rescue there. She had to make room for sheltie puppies coming in so she contacted the Norwegian Elkhound Canadian Assoc. in B.C. who from somewhere had my name and gave it to the lady in Selkirk. After all the heartache I have had trying to find Sable, I just had to help with this dog....and hope that if someone has found Sable they have done the same for him.
