Skinny Kitten

I have a 7 month old kitten and i had noticed he was really skinny. He eats and is active and everything just really skinny. I had him dewormed when he was 8 weeks old, so last week i took him to the vet (she is a good vet but not much one for taking the time to answer questions) anyways she said he has a tape worm and he was given medication for it, now is the tape worm suppose to come out when he goes to the bathroom because i haven't noticed anything yet and its been about a week also how long will it take before i should start noticing some weight gain as i said he seems healthy he is active he eats and goes to the bathroom regularly he just seems so skinny.

What are you feeding him? Since he's still a kitten I'd still be giving 3 meals a day of a good quality wet food
she said he has a tape worm and he was given medication for it,
How did she know he had a tapeworm? Did she examine a stool sample?

Like pattymac, I'm curious to know what your kitty eats.

On the other hand my first cat, was pretty lanky until he was about a year old. He was all tail and legs and then he started to fill out but considering he was always running and playing.

He eats Kitten chow wet food and kitten chow dry food which was recommended by the vet and he also eats the dry food i have for my other cats because its hard to keep him out of it that food is chicken soup for the cat lovers soul.
The vet just felt his tummy and said he had a tape worm.

I'd find another vet!! Kitten/cat chow is nothing but filler and garbage. I'd let him eat the good stuff!! Although wet food is ideal, Wellness is good for wet food, natural balance is another. I don't know if Chicken Soup makes a wet food.

Yeah, Kitten Chow has really crappy ingredients, especially the dry. It may or may not be related to his skinniness, but it would most certainly be better for him if you fed quality wet food only. Here is some eye-opening reading on feline nutrition: www.catinfo.org

And there is no way a vet can tell if a cat has tapeworm just by feeling his belly. Me thinks she was trying to sell you a dewormer.

If I liked my vet, i would never change vets based on the food they sell. Most vets know very little about food....but the good ones do know about tapeworms.

Did you describe other symptoms to the vet? (like seeing white tapeworm segments in the poo)

If you did, then the vet may have diagnosed the condition based on additional info you may not have added to your post.

From my understanding...it's easy to see tapeworm segments in the poo. But not every poo has these segments.

I do not think a vet can feel tapeworms in a stomach.....but how the stomach feels along with what you may have told your vet might have suggested tapeworms.

Here's an article that may help
