Because most animal lovers like to believe they're giving their dog a good home, polling Canadians on which province is most dog-friendly can be difficult, said one national pollster. "The tendency is to say yours is the best," said Sean Simpson, senior research manager for Ipsos Reid. At least half of those living in every region of the country say their own province is the most dog friendly, according to the results of the poll conducted for canada.com, released Friday. But one distinct trend in the poll suggested Ontario might be the least dog-friendly province — and even Ontarians agree, with nearly one-quarter of them admitting their area of the country is not exactly puppy paradise. "You had 13 possible choices — all the provinces and territories," Simpson said. "And one-third picked Ontario as the worst. That's pretty strong." Quebec ranked second in least dog-friendly provinces, with 18 per cent of Canadians saying they'd rather take their dogs somewhere other than la belle province. But Quebecers disagree, with 60 per cent of respondents from there saying their province is the most dog-friendly. British Columbians made the strongest attempt to claim their home as the best for man's best friend, with 82 per cent saying their province was the best suited for a dog. And while 56 per cent of Albertans picked their own province as the most dog-friendly, people there were also most likely to recognize another fido-friendly province, with two in 10 Albertans willing to pass the torch to B.C. The "urban-rural" divide seemed to represent the most distinct deciding factor, Simpson said. "You know, walking Fido down Queen St. West isn't the nicest walk," he said in reference to Toronto's busy thoroughfare. "So on the other side, you have provinces where there's a lot of nature, even in the cities, or very close. In Vancouver, you have Stanley Park, or drive 30 minutes out of the city, and you're in the mountains." The online poll, conducted June 10-14 with a sample of 1,017 adults, has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. © Copyright (c) Postmedia News |
I think Ontario is the least dog friendly province by far. Animal friendly even. Nothing really stands a chance here.

On what do they base the criteria in determining what province is the most/least dog friendly? The article really doesn't say.
Edit: Okay, I see it seems to be talking about things like green spaces and such. |
mikischo,we in Ontario also kill pit-bulls,for just being pitties, kill dogs/cats because of ringworm and I am sure if McGuinty and Michael Bryant had had their way all dogs over more than 15 lb's would be banned.

No mention of the Eastern Provinces? Lots and lots of green spaces there, board walks, lakes, trails, and beaches.
Montreal is pretty annoying to have a dog in, there is almost no green areas, and of the ones there are dogs are either not allowed or need to be on leash (ok I understand the on leash business, but it's nice to have somewhere dogs can run) The dog parks are super small and have pea or crush gravel that dogs don't like, and some don't have water fountains for dogs, no parks for small dogs only. Finding apartments is difficult. I read somewhere in QC dogs aren't allowed in a lot of campgrounds, national/provincial parks, good thing i never travelled to one and found out the hard way. |
