Miniature Daschund puppy losing hair

We recently bought a puppy for my boyfriend's kids. She's a miniature red female puppy and totally adorable but she appears to be losing a little hair in spots. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered that.

Where did you get her?

Sharpel729 February 24th, 2004 01:18 PM

We got her from a breeder in Waldo, FL. She has her papers and is a great little puppy. She was born in August 2003. We don't get to see her that often as she lives with the kids in Gainsville but I was just curious if it was a common problem to Dachshunds. Next time she is in Orlando, if the problem persists, I'll bring her to my vet.

Not sure but it could be an allergy.Maybe to the puppy food.Is she itching or scratching?

Have they or you contacted the breeder?

If it was a licenced responsible breeder, they will want to know what's going on with the puppy and how things are going on.

Have the kids taken her to a vet?I wouldn't wait till you took her.

Also, please don't take this the wrong wat.Just because she has papers,it doesn't mean she came from a licenced reputable breeder.A backyard breeder can register pups.

I believe she was a reputable breeder but to my knowledge she has not checked up on the dog. I'll find out if they problem persists and if they have taken her to the vet tonight. She has been on Science Diet puppy food from day one. They variety may have changed but the brand the same. I'll check on that as well.

Is this still happening? If so have the kids take her to a vet.Don't wait to long either.

When did you get her?

How old was she when you got her?

Sharpel729 February 24th, 2004 02:42 PM

Yes, we'll find out how she is soon and be sure that they take her to the vet if the problem persists.

We got her in October of 2003 and she was 8 weeks old. She has had all her shots and was recently spayed at 6 months old.

I am so glad to hear she was fixed:D

Here is a link that will help you define a responsible breeder to a backyard breeder.

Thank you as we have been considering getting a dachshund ourselves and I've been doing a lot of reaearch on local breeders.

mona_b February 24th, 2004 03:09 PM

Then that info will help you out alot.:D

Also, have you considered looking into a rescue?

Sharpel729 February 24th, 2004 03:12 PM

Yes, we may consider that as well. Right now are able to spend a lot of time with Princess and the kids... but down the road, we'll probably look into getting our own.

I have a miniature black and tan dachshund who just turned one last week. He has a couple of 'balding' spots on his head and his belly is very sparse as well. The vet said it was just 'hereditary baldness', nothing to worry about. It gets thinner as he gets older, but I'm not worried. Doesn't hurt to ask your vet, although I wouldn't make a special trip for it if it's not bothering the puppy.
