Dog food and shedding

Does anyone have any opinions on dog food and relationship to shedding? I know that different foods can affect thier coats. Right now, our tile and laminate floor usually looks carpetted by the end of the day. We are feeding her Performatrim which we thought was pretty good (no corn!), but we're shocked that Daisy isn't bald by now. Any thoughts?

Lucky Rescue December 7th, 2004 04:22 PM

Daisy is a Rottie mix, right? I believe Rotties shed quite a bit, but yes - food definitely has an impact.

When I got my pit bull she was in poor condition, eating crap food and would shed so badly that if you touched her clouds of hair flew out.

She's been on Wellness for two years. Her coat is tight and glossy and shedding is so minimal as to be almost non-existant.

I'm not familiar with Performatrim.

Yes, she is a rotti-mix, thanks for remembering! :)

She's a rotti-pitbull (or rotten pitbull, as we affectionately call her!). I wasn't aware that rotti's shed so much (okay, until now!). I'm wondering if we should look at changing her food? My only fear is she's brutal with food changes (she'll eat anything, it just takes her a while to be able to, uh, "process" it well). Maybe it's just the breed? We do brush her often.

You might want to try putting flax seed oil in her food or fish oil not cod liver oil just fish oil. Buy the supplements at walmart or costco way cheaper. Try it before you go for the food switch, this might help. I also live with a dog who creates wall to wall carpeting on a daily basis, the supplements have helped a lot and I also use a stripper blade (not the g string kind) this gets rid of all the execess undercoat as well. This is what they look like.

I was looking at those combs too. Would they work on a GSD? Diamond sheds a TON and we actually have "dust doggies" (not dust bunnies) that dance when the ceiling fan is on. It's funny to watch her reaction when she sees her own hair! :clown:

They come in different sizes and they work great on most dogs. I used one on Buddy the other day and I could not believe the hair that came out even after brushing him. I wanted to see how much they really get out and you would never know I had just brushed him. They should take a lot of loose undercoat out

Definitely get a shedding comb. They work fantastically!

In regards to Flaxseed oil, myself and other Golden owners have found that this oil GIVES our dogs the itchies. Don't ask my why, but it does. I would stay clear of Flaxseed oil! I use to advocate the stuff, but not anymore since one of my girls started itching bad. I figured it out, thank heavens and all is good again. I do use fish oil though.

We do brush her, but she just seems to keep shedding. I'll definitely try the fish oil.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

I recently switched dog food to Prescription Diet d/d (you can only get it at a vet and it's a little expensive) but I've seen a lot of improvement in KimChi's coat. Before you could just tug on her hair and it would come out. Now it's much better.

Prescription Diet and Omega 3, great combo for skin and coat.

Lots less hair growing on the floor :)

When you say Omega 3, do you mean the fish oil? And can I use the stuff I take for the gym (it's pure fish oil, no additives)? We've been giving her the same glucosamine tablets that I take, on the advice of our vet. She's really good at taking pills, we just say, "Open", and she lets us put it in her throat, a little massage, and it's usually gone, though she doesn't like it.

How much is Prescription Diet in Korea and is it made by the same people who make Science Diet? Is there any corn in Prescription diet?

The stuff I'm using now (Evolve) is very expensive and likely not available in the city where we're moving this month....

Thanks Hound_dog![/COLOR]

Hound_Dog December 9th, 2004 12:45 AM

I'm paying about 12 000 won for a 1kg bag....really expensive. I'm not sure about the corn....ANF also makes something for "sensitive skin" dogs and I'm pretty sure that one doesn't contain corn. Our vet recommended either of the two but he didn't have any of the ANF on hand. I think the ANF is cheaper per Kilogram.

Prescription Diet is the same brand as Science Diet but can only be purchased from a licensed vet. I'm working on seeing if I can get it cheaper because Cafri and KimChi are both on Prescription Diet ( u/d and d/d ) and Cafri goes through a kilo in roughly a week. It's about 50 000 won to feed him every month and as you know, you can get a 17kg bag of other stuff (i.e. pro plan) for about the same price.
