Woman accused of hanging dog inside animal shelter

The hunt is on for the owner of a Caledon dog rescue centre who is being accused of hanging a dog inside a Toronto animal shelter this past summer.

On Aug. 24, the woman brought a Shar Pei named Henry into a Toronto Animal Services facility on Sheppard Avenue for the purpose of transferring the dog to the facility.

Toronto police allege the woman then went into a room and hung the dog using a leash she had brought with her.

Workers in the facility managed to get the dog down, but he was already dead.

The woman then took off. Police say they believe the suspect runs Scooby's Dog House.

Toronto Animal Services initially handled the investigation internally, but called in Toronto police in December.

Suspect Rita Mueller, 50, is wanted for killing or injuring an animal, causing or permitting unnecessary pain and disobeying a court order.

She is described as white, five-foot-four, 115 lbs., with blonde hair and blue eyes. She frequents Peel Region and the City of Barrie.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (416) 808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).

Woman accused of choking dog surrenders to police

A Bolton woman who is accused of hanging her dog by its leash inside an animal shelter has turned herself into police for questioning.

Toronto police released the name of the suspect Thursday afternoon, detailing a gruesome account of animal cruelty that took place last August.

A woman walked into the office of the Toronto Animal Services on Sheppard Avenue on Aug. 24 with a dog. The woman was allegedly in a room with the animal when it choked to death.

Officials with the shelter later told police the woman left the scene at that time.

TAS had conducted their own investigation before turning over the case to Toronto police.

The 50-year-old suspect is said to own a dog rescue organization called Scooby's Dog House and Rescue.

Police said Thursday they were afraid she could be a threat to other animals in her possession.

Investigators said a suspect turned herself in to police early morning Friday.

Rita Mueller has been charged with killing or injuring an animal other than cattle, causing or permitting unnecessary pain or injury or suffering to an animal or bird, and disobeying a court order.

I heard this while driving yesterday. I know better than to believe what I hear in the media but one thing I heard was that she was to transport the dog to a new owner. Why, if that's true, was she allowed access to this dog and trusted to transport it in the first place? With her previous history why was she allowed to even enter the building?
