Now there's canine Crimestoppers. Animal Care and Control along with the Indianapolis Police Department will kick off a new program Monday afternoon designed to go after those involved in dog fighting. Dog fighting convictions went up 400 percent last year in Marion County. It's now a felony to participate in such activity. "Dog fighting often involves other illegal activities such as gambling and illegal narcotics so everything is intertwined. So if we work as a team and as a group we're more likely to be effective at this program in combating dog fighting," said Margie Smith-Simmons, Animal Care and Control. "Some people associate dog fighting with gang activity. We're becoming a more violent society and it's a blood sport in every aspect of the word," said Lt. Dave Walker, Crimestoppers. Pit bulls are the primary breed used to fight. Animal Care and Control has captured several of the animals, which are going to be put down. Their concern is that the dogs could be adopted, only to be pressed into fighting again. If you're aware of dog fighting, call Crimestoppers at 262-TIPS and you could recieve a cash reward for information leading to an arrest.
