sick new puppy

I have had my new lab puppy for 2.5 weeks and she has had diarrhea the entire time. We have been to the vet 3 times. She has tested neg for Parvo, was treated with Flagyl and Albon for 1 week each. She continues to eat and drink and is very playful. She is currently being tested for Salmonella/Campylobacter. Any ideas on what else this could be?

Did you change her diet at all? Puppies have very sensitive stomachs and any kind of change in feeding may have that affect.
What are you feeding her and what was she on before? I don't know if that would last for two weeks. The vet has no idea?

The breeder has her on Pro Plan and I kept her on the same food until the vet had me switch a few days ago to Eukanuba. If the next tests come back neg we will need to do further testing to look for maldigestive syndromes.

Did you bring a stool sample for the vet to check for parasites?

What kind of breeder did she come from?....There are 3 definitions to the word breeder. The Good,The Bad and The Ugly...

Have you called this breeder to let them know what is going on with your pup?If not,you should call.

I have heard that Labs have very sensitive tummys.

How old is your pup?

The breeder is aware. She has been breeding labs for 12 years. I am keeping her informed of all that is going on. She is stumped as well. My puppy is 9 weeks old.

Oliver, who is 9 months old, had similar symptoms and it turned out to be a bad reaction to internal parasites (coccidia to be exact). My understanding is that for them to be able to test for this parasite pup has to be at the vet since the parasite dies in the stool within half an hour - therefore, the vet has to get a fresh stool sample.

Hope this helps and good luck to you!!!

If she is on antibiotics you will get false negative results for many things..including parasites.

Sadie had this problem and we took her off the flagyl for a couple of days and she was placed on another antibiotic that isn't as hard on the intestinal track as flagyl.

I'll find the name of that today and let you know.

Poor pup I know how tough it is, boy oh boy !

Make sure he stays hydrated though as pups can get hypoglycemic really easily.

IMHO this is when I started to wean Sadie off of regular dog food and prepare her meals. It boosted her immunity and helped her recover.

We boiled chicken and potato and mashed them together, adding some water and on every other meal some white rice.

She was fed about 7 small meals a day and chewed on lots of ice cubes that I made from the chicken broth.

Best of luck, keep us posted and I'll get the name of the meds for ya today.
