If you live in Ontario, who is your Vet?
 

I'm trying to find a new Vet. I need one that approves a canned or raw diet, accepts new patients, accepts walk-ins (preferred), flexible hours of operation and up to $50/visit. I live in the North End of Etobicoke and am willing to drive as north as Barrie or as south as Mississauga/Oakville, maybe Burlington.

I'm almost resigned to stop calling Vets around me as they have all been pro-dry food. I am going to call The Cat Hospital in North York tomorrow, it is a cat only Vet, it sounds promising but we'll see. If this is your Vet plz comment! :)

Oh, good luck with finding a vet that charges less than $50 a visit. The "cheapest" I have found in this area was $56. After going to him for a while I found out he is great with dogs. Not so great with cats.
Not sure we can actually mention vet's names on Pets for legal reasons. I think that's stated somewhere in the rules? But people can PM you with the info you want.
I tend to turn a deaf ear when vets start pushing their junky food. Or pretend interest and not buy any works too. Earlier in the year I did send one vet a huge amount of information on feeding canned or raw. She had asked for some proof as to why dry was harmful to cats. :rolleyes: (Should have charged her for printing costs :D ).

Right now, the one we go to charges about $50, and then I called another one and they charge $40. They also didn't recommend a raw diet because of the so-called bacteria :rolleyes: clearly, they are only thinking through the eyes of humans, tsk tsk such a shame!

I was also able to email some mobile vets and most are recommending a dry AND wet diet. I guess that's an improvement but the most I was quoted was $69 for a 30 minute visit. Is that good?

:offtopic: Sometimes I wish I was smart enough to endure 6 years of University to be a cat only vet and promote high quality canned and raw diets. But that would consist of me arguing with the food "professors" aka the dry food spokesperson disputing their marketing schemes. :frustrated::yell: They should know that when a cat chews kibble, it doesn't help their teeth cuz it CRUMBLES! :wall:

My vet here in Oakville has never once questioned my choice of Wellness canned for my cats,he's maybe a few dollars cheaper than my old vets,but totally won me over the first time I met him.

Our vet promotes wet food for cats, and won't question you feeding a food like Wellness, but if asked promotes Science Diet :wall:. Of course there is more than one vet at the practice, and it depends who you get. our cats keep having accidents and slightly unusual problems so we keep getting the same vet, she wants to see whata they have done this time. I'm a little far out of your way though

I am between Hamilton and St Catharines. Closer to St. Cats. I take my cats to St Cats at the moment but that may change. :rolleyes: The vet office charges $65 for an office visit.

Just a caution. Just because a vet is cheap does not mean anything. Remember that adage "You get what you pay for." $69 for a mobile vet to come to your house for 1/2 hour! I'd jump at it!!

As for the food being pushed. You do not need to use the vet's food in order to keep on seeing the vet. They can biatch all they want about what you are feeding your cats. Doesn't mean a thing. As long as [B]you[/B] are comfortable in what you are feeding and confident it is keeping your cats healthy then pretend interest and don't buy the food on the way out.

If you are interested in pursuing being a vet why not? It has nothing to do with being "smart enough." It has a lot to do with having the heart to do it.

I agree, price doesn't mean anything. The Vet I took Snowball to just prior to my move was expensive, but I think they aided in his death :sad:. My current vet charges $65 for a visit and if they don't have an answer they research it. Also, they do follow up calls the next day :thumbs up, so they earn that 65 bucks.

They stopped discussing diet with me, 'cause, ummm, *cough*, I "challenged" them on the raw diet issue :o and now they won't offer to sell any prescription diet when one of my kitties has an issue. So 14+ is right, you feed your cats the best food that you can afford. Doesn't matter what the vet thinks.

I have a great vet, who ive been told by people who didnt know I took my cats there is the best vet in kitchener-waterloo. Ironically, the person who told me that said her best friend got fired as a vet tech (she said wrongfully so, accused of stealing), yet she still takes her pets there (even tho she lives in the far end of kitchener and the vets office is in waterloo)!! When asked why she said because in the end she is the best vet in the area :shrug:

Exams are $60 but like L4H i think its well earned. Follow up calls the next day etc.

She feeds her animals raw diet though she uses powder to mix with it and has that available in her office. Never once told me wellness/orijen (when i fed it) was a bad food.

What I like is that she also studies natural medicine/ chiropractics/ homeopathy and is always bringing new things in to her practice :thumbs up For my cats its also a thumbs up because she worked at a cats only clinic in the GTA for several years before opening her clinic.

Oh and she fussed over my kitties when I bring them...i mean i know its silly but its nice when the vet is flirting with your babies hehehe :crazy: I think she is great with animals. At one time she brought in another vet to the practice but he didnt last long...Im glad too because his 'bedside manor' wasnt very nice, all business (i also got the sense he was probably more of a dog person, wasnt very interested in my bunduk at the time).

I agree with the flirting thing, Onster. :lovestruck:, just gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling that the vet really cares :lovestruck:.

I just started going to another Vet...so I can't say if I'm impressed or not, the overall feeling of the place is nicer, less chaotic and less cramped than the Old Vet....an office visit here is $44 and yesterday when I took Jack in for something unrelated to when he was there two weeks ago, they just charged $32.50 and put it down as a recheck :shrug:

there is a wonderful vet in Oakville names Lisa Burgess, promotes raw or canned feeding, also practices holistic medicine and will make house calls. Not possitive what her rates are but never heard anything but good things about her.

You know what I mean?

Can you please PM the vet you go to in Kitchener. According to the vet I go to now my cat may have a food allergy they're not really certain. I want to put her on a raw food diet, but, the vet where I go to now tried pushing a commercial brand pet food with the first three ingredients being grain based. I'd like to go to someone that sees cats as the carnivore's they are, not the cows they'd like them to be.

I don't know if my vets support raw feeding or not because diet has not been discussed with me since I got a bit snippy with one of the vets over what I was feeding my Shih Tzu when he was a puppy(he's 4 now).

Last time I looked there was a "Do not talk about feeding" note on his file and probably on the others as well. Of course my vet should love me no matter what since between regular well visits, losing both our cats(one to cancer and one to a neurological problem) and other incidentals we dropped about $2,000 there last year. I did notice them giving us some breaks near the end of the year but I think it was only because I mentioned the fact we had been there 4 times in 2 months for various things.

This thread is a little old, but I live in Kitchener and was just wondering if any of you did ever get the name of the vet Onster was talking about? Please PM me the name of the vet if you know. Thank you.

For folks near Hamilton Burlington I recommend the Cat Clinic in Hamilton. There number is 905-3874151. I love this vet. Good Luck!
