Cleaning a Dog's Ears

What is the best way to clean out a dog's ears? My dog is constantly shaking his head, I tooka look in his ears and they are pretty dirty, I tried to use a QTip but he would not hold still in order for me to do it, any other suggestions?

Hello Joe549,

I am going through the ear cleaning regime and also some antibiotic treatment for yeast in my bulldog.
We use some solution called DermaPet MalAcetic Otic, although I am sure there are plenty of other solutions as well.
It is in a bottle, and I spread it on a large gauze pad, and using my finger gently clean his ears. With my guy, too much pressure or vigorous rubbing can irritate his ears, so I have to be a bit careful.
He really didn't like getting it done at first, though he is getting better and more tolerant. Once you have cleaned your dog's ears, provided that there is no infection or yeast, you will hopefully see the symptoms abate quickly. Some people just put the solution in and massge it into the ear and use gauze to remove the excess, but my guy will have no part of this at all.
I would move away from using the cotton swab because there is a chance you could puncture the ear drum or injure the ear. Additionally, I go with something fairly easy to grab, like gauze, instead of a cotton ball which also could get lost in an ear.
Hope this helps. You may want to think about getting the vet to swab his ear and run a slide since it may have some nasty bacteria in there as well.
Cheers,
joanne

Use a cotton ball with some ear cleaning solution intended for dogs.....and avoid water in the ear. :)

If he continues, a vet visit is probably a good idea to rule out infection.

I personally find the first cleaning is best done by your vet. Sometimes hair needs to be plucked, and if there is a bad infection, your vet will be able to clear it all out and you can maintain.
