BLUE RING AROUND LEFT EYE-Discussion with Dr. Lee

2 Attachment(s)
I am so honoured to have had discussions with Dr. Lee concerning a blue ring around Gryphon's eye that oddly enough--comes and goes. With his approval, I am showing our discussions below and would like to know if anyone else here has experienced with weird observance?

Hello,

Thanks for the question. Eyes can be difficult to diagnose over the internet. From your description I assume there is no change in vision and pet feels fine. From the first picture I was wondering if perhaps there might be some tissue change in the third eyelid (scar tissue, low vascular area of tissue or mass).

In the second picture the blue ring looks to be the normal part of the eye called the sclera (the whites of our eyes). Next time you see your vet, I would ask that she or he takes a detailed look at Gryphon's eye.

Take care and hope it helps.

Referring to the color of the sclera. We typically think of it as white. However some dogs do have brown sclera’s from pigment and other dogs will have a range of 'white'. This range of white is due to the effects of many colors and light that we see in the area - the color of the iris, the pigmented or non-pigmented third eyelid, the fur color and deep or shallow setting of the eye will all affect the quality of white that we perceive of the sclera.

Typically with generalized illness and sclera color change we look for yellow (liver disease, certain blood diseases, etc...) and red (inflammation of the eye or conjunctiva). I suppose blue could be with certain problems of oxygenation but we would have to see a dramatic change of color of the gums/both eyes/and the pet.

In the end we are concerned about the presence of a focal disease of the left eye - I would just have Gryphon evaluated by your regular vet at the next check up unless some other clinical signs occur.

Best wishes.

Dr. Lee

I am so happy to have gathered this information and Gryphon will be visiting our Vet the end of this month for his yearly check up. With Dr. Lee's assistance, I feel confident and better prepared to ask questions and inquire about this oddness.

Overall, Gryphon is in good health and can see very well afterall, he was able to seek and find skunks in the evening's darkness :frustrated:

Thanks Bailey :)

I have been very ed-u-ma-cated discussing this concern with Dr. Lee. He has been more than helpful and it's nice to know we have someone like him on this forum to express concerns. :thumbs up

Gryphon went to the vet this past Saturday and I brought along pictures and information regarding the blue ring.

Our vet was bewildered about the blue ring and said (quote--unquote), "this is very strange...I've never seen a blue ring around the sclera before but...it shouldn't be anything to worry about" :frustrated::frustrated:

How can a vet say that they've never seen a blue ring around the sclera (eye) before BUT...I shouldn't be concerned about it????

Sure he gave me some excuses that because Gryphon is in fact--clumsy that he may have banged into something and bruised his eye but I just can't buy that. :frustrated: The fact that this ring only occurs in his left eye--concerns me.

I just don't know at this point how to go about getting a second opinion or where else to turn to.

Other than the blue ring--Gryphon was a good boy at the vet and checked out great (other than losing a couple of winter pounds :D).

Soft tissue trauma, i.e. 'banging', should lead to scleral hemorrhage which would appear as a bright red discoloration of the sclera. It would also resolve over time. If the 'blue' is from scar tissue (fibrosis), then one would think that prior evidence of inflammation or trauma (both red) would have been previously seen.

As far as a second opinion, I would look for a veterinary ophthalmologist (specialist). Most veterinary opthalmologists are associated with Eye Care for Animals. Perhaps they have a referral for you.

I hope this helps. :pawprint:

Thank you Dr. Lee for your additional response. I'll look into the Eye Care for Animals website in further detail. From just a quick glance at their website, it looks interesting and perhaps I may find some more informative solutions.

I see you are in the Niagara area. The list on Eye Care for Animals contains US vets. I don't think there is a vet. opthalmologist located in that area of Ontario. The closest may be in Oakville, but he is a really good opthalmologist. I know a number of people who use him including a friend that is a breeder and has all her dog's eyes evaluated by him.

His info is:

Dr. Michael Zigler, DVM, CertVOphthal. (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, UK)
Referrals in Veterinary Ophthalmology
Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital

Thank you Satchelp. I'm a real "googler" and cannot for the life of me, find anything that would or can explain this peculiar observation.

Oakville is far closer to home and will inquire.

i noticed today that my puppy has the blue ring around both of her irises

dartfrog September 9th, 2009 06:49 PM

our boxer puppy has it too, his eyes also reflect blue (his eyes are brown)

Dee-O-Gee September 9th, 2009 08:05 PM

Gryphon still has it and it comes and goes.

It hasn't affected his eye sight for the past 5 years. We just keep monitoring it and hope that it will stay neutral as it's been.
