What breed is our puppy?

Last night at puppy class, hubby and I were approached by someone there who asked us what breed our puppy, Byron, is. We responded that we know that his mum is a golden, but were told that his dad is a black lab. The lady said that she was surprised because he looks very much like a flat coat retriever that she used to have. It got me thinking and I googled some photos and lo-and-behold the pictures I saw could have been Byron! So now I am wondering what our furbaby is! The Flat Coat Retriever’s temperament has been described by some websites as “on the go outdoors, but quiet indoors…” which is exactly what Byron is (to this day, hubby and I are very surprised to note how quiet he is indoors! He rarely barks and is quite calm—most of the time—for a puppy).

So anyhoo, I have attached pictures, so see for yourself! What do you think?

Sidenote: These pictures were taken when he was 3 months old. He is now 4 months and all that has changed is that he is taller and his tail has fanned out a bit more.

I feel you mafia! When hubby and I were on the search for a dog, we obsessively visited Petfinder...and many times we were disappointed because the dogs we were interested in were in the process of being adopted or had already been adopted. But don't lose hope! The perfect pup is out there still! We found Byron, didn't we? :)

OMG I forgot how cute they were, sorry Prin, I know how much you loved them, and how hard it was to let go. You should start a new thread, to let us all know how they are doing, and post some updated pics.:)

Byron does look quite similar to them though:love:

Had to delete the previous post as I got unexpected company. Anyways, Prin's little guys look fluffier to me than Byron. I found these pics of flat coated retriever puppies....

I don't know how they're doing. I haven't had an update since the week after they left here.:(

Keep in mind, they're extra fuzzy because they're only 8-9 weeks old in those pics. Take away the puppy fuzz and you have Byron.:D

But yeah, the flatties look like him too...

Aren't flat coats derived from a mix, way back when, with Goldens (or maybe goldens came from flat coats?) ?

coppperbelle October 20th, 2006 09:48 PM

What breed is our puppy?

Flatcoats have longer noses than goldens or labs but as a puppy it is difficult to tell how long their nose will be. If you check out our web site this is a picture of a golden/lab cross that I fostered. She was about 9 weeks old at the time.

Thanks all for your input!:highfive:
