Do certain dog foods reduce shedding? - Answered by Dr. Slome

I've heard that certain dog foods can reduce shedding. My logic tells me that shedding is natural, and no dog food could affect it. Am I wrong? Does anyone know if there actually is a food that really does have an effect?

A good quality food can affect shedding. The hair is healthier. I feed my girls raw food with flax seed oil and my rottweiler still sheds, but not as bad as she did before.

No kidding??? Isn't flax seed oil a laxative? What kind of food do you use?

OOPS! The girls are getting 2,000 miligrams of Salmon Oil every day. Sorry, I forgot I switched them over. I get a bottle at Wal-Mart of the people kind. Chase also gets glucosomine as she is older.

Salmon oil! Thank you very much! I will get some today. I appreciate your prompt response- must have been online at the perfect time!

Also, after your first reply, I looked up postings by you, and I'm wondering- do you have any pet photos posted? I am new to this site, and perhaps I'm not navigating properly. I did find several insightful text postings but none with pics.

Seems like I posted on of Chase when I first joined and if you can find the Jones Soda Label thread, it will lead you to my favorite picture of Missy, the nottweiler.

This link will take you to my website. There is a beautiful picture of my Chase there.

BTW, what type of dog do you have?

Awww your rottie is gorgeous! Whatta doll! Nice bed, too! Thanks for the link.

I'm sorry, I am going to have to update my profile to show what pets I have. (Am learning the etiquette here). I have a finnish spitz (Chloe) and a great dane (Raja). I posted some photos of them in the photo section yesterday when I first signed up. Raja is the one with the terrible shedding problem, but I think I will give the salmon oil to both of them. Seems it would be very nutritious at any rate.

Went and looked - lovely dogs! I love the nail polish. Chase gets hers painted to match mine when we go to rottweiler functions. Alway purple!

I agree that certain breeds shed a lot and season is usually the primary reason for more shedding in these breeds. Shedding can also occur with certain medical problems such as some internal medical diseases or skin diseases eg. parasites or allergies etc. which have been undetected.

Sometimes unbalanced or cheaper diets don't have enough nutrition for a healthy coat - diet does play a role but it is not a type or specific brand that does it. The better quality foods usually have correct levels of the omega 6 and 3 oils and in the correct ratio which are important for a heatlhy coat. These are the foods you want to keep your pet on.

As long as the coat is healthy just use slicka brush or shedding tool/rake on a regular basis to help remove all the dead fur.
