Sam the BMD - graphic photos

My name is Sam. I am an approximately one year old Bernese Mountain Dog who was found as a stray and in a terrible state. I am very nice and gentle, and I have done nothing to deserve this. How could anyone neglect me this bad ? :(

OMG,is it mange?He looks like a 10 yr old dog.

chico2 July 8th, 2006 04:03 PM

Oh no,poor baby...I just do not understand how some people sleep at night, maybe they were just born evil:evil:

badger July 8th, 2006 04:06 PM

So sad. Is it curable? He looks very happy to be rescued, what a sweetheart.
OMG,is it mange?He looks like a 10 yr old dog.
Probably is, yes. He's losing his fur all over his body, his skin is oozing, his eyes are swollen, he is just skin and bones.

I can't believe he is still hanging on to life.

Inverness July 8th, 2006 04:10 PM
So sad. Is it curable? He looks very happy to be rescued, what a sweetheart.
Sure. It's just gonna take a while and a lot of care. The saddest thing is that we would want to just lie next to him and give him a hug, but we can't touch him. He's hurting from everywhere - he can't even stand a collar.

chico2 July 8th, 2006 04:14 PM

I don't know much about mange, but it sounds horrible, where was he found? Was he dumped at your rescue, like the kittens and pups?
Maybe BMDlover can help out,is she not also part of a rescue?

100%doglover July 8th, 2006 07:15 PM

OMG, this poor baby! He looks terrible. I'm glad he's in good hands now and will get the help he deserves!

Toonces July 8th, 2006 08:18 PM

Oh the poor boy, glad he has found his way to you, breaks my heart to see that. Thanks for taking him in I bet he recovers in no time under your care.

BMDLuver July 8th, 2006 08:54 PM

It's the first I hear of Sam but I would be more than happy to help him in any way Inverness would like help with him. Any Berner, anytime. :thumbs up

jesse's mommy July 8th, 2006 08:57 PM

He is beautiful. If it is definitely mange, do you think it's curable?

mastifflover July 8th, 2006 09:07 PM

Mange is curable but very painful and takes a long time. Poor baby he did not deserve this. You are an angel Inverness. Give him a kiss on the nose for me,

meb999 July 8th, 2006 09:21 PM

OMG...that's terrible...poor little guy. My heart really goes out to him
If you find a mange-free spot on his body, please give him a little kiss for me. Keep us updated on his progress....

Prin July 8th, 2006 11:54 PM

Poor doggy. I hope he can make it to the good life he's going to get after Inverness is through with him.:fingerscr :fingerscr :fingerscr :fingerscr

Dudster July 11th, 2006 11:35 AM

Despite his obvious discomfort he has a beautiful face...it kills me when I see things like this......give him a kiss for me if you can.

coppperbelle July 11th, 2006 08:58 PM

Sam

Poor guy, he must be so uncomfortable. He is in good hands now.

BernerLver July 11th, 2006 09:28 PM

Iverness: I had a physical reaction to your photos, I am having a difficult time even typing this response.

Being a BMD lover and having 2 who are rescues, please let me know if there is something I can do to help even if it is to put to word out to some of my fellow Berner owners.

Those photos are very upsetting to say the least.

cpietra16 July 11th, 2006 10:09 PM

i would like to help...please pm me if there any thing I can do....poor baby. His face carries so much pain:(
I don't know much about mange, but it sounds horrible, where was he found? Was he dumped at your rescue, like the kittens and pups?
He was found as a stray. I'm pretty sure Sam decided he had had enough of being tied in a backyard somewhere and just broke his chain and ran away. :(

Inverness July 11th, 2006 10:51 PM

Sam is not doing very well. We went back to the vet today and had some Vanectyl prescribed to try and stop the itching. Sam is just a huge oozing, bleeding sore at the moment. He is so uncomfortable he doesn't eat, he just lies down and sleeps - or tries to. There has been no improvement of his condition, it even seems to be getting worse. I'll wait and see if the Vanectyl kicks in tomorrow, and if not, we'll go back to the vet again. I'm worried for the big guy.

Prin July 12th, 2006 12:04 AM

I hope he gets through this. Poor guy.

paula383 July 12th, 2006 05:05 AM

poor dog, there are so many  people out there

mastifflover July 12th, 2006 06:48 AM

Inverness how is Sam doing I cannot stop thinking about this poor boy? I have posted a link below describing the 3 types of mange for anyone interested. I was told there is a natural cure for it but that may depend on which type he has.

Berner's are my fav dog, looking at that face just made me cry. They are such beautiful dogs and seem to never complain, they just love you all the same. I find they have a noble personality, even my last dog Travis who was a cross was such a gentle giant ( I still miss him terribly). One day I hope to rescue a BMD, but not until I can live in the country and have lots of room for him to roam. Give Sam a kiss for me, I hope he will find happiness in his life. Keep us updated on how he does. :grouphug: from me and Tucker.

lizzieblue July 26th, 2006 04:28 PM

What is wrong with people these days?
Has the world gone mad?
Poor guy, :( keep your chin up!
Can anyone tell me the latest on him?
Some good news would be nice!!!

Sam had shown major improvements with high dosages of cortisone. His skin was healing and he was definitely more comfortable. Unfortunately, while trying to lower the dosage, we have reverted to what he was like when he arrived. His skin problem flaired up immediately. We are back with the higher dosage and are going to the vet tomorrow for a reassesment.

One good thing though: he does eat well now, providing I serve him home-cooked meals... :)
