That Black Oiled Sunflower seeds from bird food can grow into lovely sunflowers?

I've never bought or planted sunflowers but these just appeared next to my bird feeder and also volunteering in my rose bed.

They're so pretty! :lovestruck:

Yep--black oil sunflower seeds are viable, as are striped sunflower seeds. Ours sprout up every year, only to be lopped off and stripped down to bare twigs by the bunnies... :frustrated: ...or by Brier... :o Very pretty, DOG!

I grow them deliberately, from bought packets of seeds, while my husband grows them by accident, spilling bird seed when he feeds our cockatoo. :) Yours look great Dee-O-Gee , and you've a lovely garden by the looks of things. Not a weed in sight - you should see the weeds here. LOL.
I am about to plant sunflower seeds now and have some new types this year, which will be interesting.

Well Mollie & Gryphon can't reach these sunflowers nor the bird feeder so no gnawing for them. Bunnies on the other hand have free access but they haven't gotten into them yet. :fingerscr

I've seen your sunflowers GF and wonderful ones at that. :lovestruck: What are the new types your deciding on?

I've also got one growing from a bird's sunflower seed in my mum's garden, I had it here at my apt in a pot until the building decided to power wash the balconies so I had to transplant it. It's only about 2 feet tall w/a flower head just starting :D

The new ones are Lilac Spray, Italian White and Ice Lady. Italian White is a branching sunflower with dark chocolate centres and creamy white petals. Ice Lady has huge golden yellow heads up to 50 cms accross. Lilac Spray is a tall, multi-headed variety. Photo's will be posted if I get them growing. I'll be flat out this Spring and Summer I think. Might be getting a new dog shortly, a 2 year old female ACD, and training her and getting a good bond with her will cut into my gardening time I reckon. Bring on the longer days.
