Something for callused dry paws?
 

Odin has a toe that is dry and callused, and he doesn't walk on it. It's his "pinky" toe on his left back paw. THe foster said it was like that when they got him. It's almost like it's higher and doesn't come in contact with the ground.

Anyway, the vet seems to think that if we got it softened up, he might begin walking on it again, which would be better in the long run for his legs as his feet would be supported on all 4 toes, instead of three.

Although, she didn't suggest what to use to soften it up. I was thinking vaseline, as that is what a couple web sites suggested.

We also have been looking for some paw protectors, and haven't found any in his side. Everywhere is sold out for the season! Can you order mutluks online?

I heard about "bag balm" for dogs. IT's actually for cows, but supposedly it works wonders.

Vaseline does work- we used it on my parent's JRT, and on my cat's pads. Bag Balm is good as well- it is vaseline-based but also has a bit of antiseptic in it. The only trouble is it rubs off as the animal walks around. But if the dog's toe doesn't hit the floor this might not be an issue.... If you can get booties- it wouldn't hurt to rub a bit of the vaseline/bag balm on, and then put the bootie on.

Bag balm is great I use it on Buddys elbows because they tend to get callouses on them I have a big jar at home if you want I can give you some I have a fairly big tub and I can get it from my friend she rides and picks it up for me whenever I need it. Let me know and if Archie wants to stop by on his way home or during the day I can leave a small bottle on my door for him. It is used to keep cow udders soft it is great for humans someone told me cellulite and stretch marks as well.

I use bag balm on my feet and it works wonders :) You can buy it at Lee Valley Tools (if anyone is interested)

Bag balm rocks! I had serious trouble with breastfeeding and finally had to give up trying. It worked wonders on some of the difficulties. :eek: Most farm and horse people swear by it.

Very funny Karin and the stuff is great probably better than any of these expensive creams we use I use it on my hands if I have been painting with oil based paints your know that gross feeling of no moisture in your skin. I put the bag balm on and a pair of cheap gloves works wonders

I have tried both, used it on the pads on my Aussie in the winter to prevent ice balls on the feet when we went out for walks...(he hated the booties)
I would recomment that you apply it in the evening before going to bed and wrap up the paw with some cotton gause so that you do not have a mess on the floors and carpets....also will prevent him from licking it off. If you can get some of the elastic gauze they use at the vets, that would be even better as it can not be so easily removed.

If I remember correctly, vasoline really seals, so do not use too much vasoline as it will prevent the skin from breathing.
