Jack Russell scratching eye.
 

Hello,
I have a 2 year old Jack Russel and for the past little while he has been scratching his right eye as if its itchy. It hasn't been anything more than scratching it once a day or so, but sometimes he scratches it and it starts to bleed. We took him to the vet and they just prescribed Polysporin eye drops which I've been giving him everyday but he still scratches every so often and is missing some hair around his one eye from it. He eats regular Iams dog food that we've been giving to him for a while now and hasn't got sprayed in the eye from anything. By the way this has been happening for a month or so now.

Did the vet do a scraping to rule out demodectic mange?

I wonder if Benadryl would help?

(He's a real cutie, btw! :D)

Did the vet also check the teeth?

If that is a bunp below the eye, maybe there is a patch of infection or something in there and need systemic antibiotics?

Maybe it would help to put an e collar on your dog so his eye will not get an infection if he using his nails to scratch his eye. I agree the vet should to scraping to see if it is demodectic mange. I hope it is not.

Yes a scraping would be a great idea to rule out DM!

if that's not it - I wonder if this might have to do with being dry from heating baseboards or heaters. Now that it's cooler we are using heat - is the dog sleeping right near a heater? (I realize this might be a long shot but I thought I'd throw it out there).
