Spel chek?

Would it be possible to have a spell checker?

Puppyluv August 9th, 2005 08:30 PM

ha ha yeah! I'm the worst typist, and I feel awfully dumb when I have sentences like: "Weel In my oponion..."

happycats August 9th, 2005 08:32 PM

I wood luv it!!! :p I usually dont pay attention, and my spelling sucks!!
Great idea Freyja.

Jackie467 August 9th, 2005 08:52 PM

Great idea! My one huge downfall is my spelling. The IG board I frequent has spell check button on the bottom of the reply screen and I love it! But it may be too hard to incorporate into the board, but then again I know nothing about managing post boards lol.

Dogastrophe August 10th, 2005 06:41 AM

Spelling schmelling ....

Be sure to read the following out loud:

Woow, tahts azanming! Taht's srtngte!

Prin August 10th, 2005 01:25 PM

You all could just give me your pws and I'll go edit all your posts. :D Marko could give me editing powers... LOL I have a life; I just get anal about spelling and grammar.

I lernd to spel corekly from an erly age.

Writing4Fun August 10th, 2005 01:29 PM

Ooohhh! Spell/grammar check would kill all the young 'uns! I'm with you, Prin. Give me editing powers - I'd have a field day. Muuuuhahahahahaha!!!!

And, yeah, I've seen that whole "brain processing words" thing before. I can read it, but it the mere sight of it gives me seizures. Occupational hazard of an aspiring writer, I suppose. :p

Lizzie August 10th, 2005 02:07 PM

The fault isn't necessarily poor spelling here. I think that the problem has more to do with typing than anything else. Too often people get very relaxed when writing emails or responding to threads. People don't take the time to review their words and end up looking silly with sentences like "I woked the dwg ths mouring..."

On that note, often people use the wrong form of the word--spell check won't fix that, nor will it fix the poor grammar.

pags August 10th, 2005 03:05 PM

I'm normally pretty anal about such things as well but I have to admit my grammar takes a nosedive when I start posting on boards... Usually because I write in fits and starts even if I'm only writing a paragraph. I may type 5 words and then go make a cheese sandwich for a kid... come back and type 5 more words and so on. All of this to say I get rather long-winded and incoherent. It's a miracle if I find my spelling errors in addition to the rest.

But since we're on the subject of being anal about it... Dogastraphe - in your original 'jumbled' post - the phrase "the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat tlleers in a wrod are" is more or less duplicated in the same sentence. :D
It made me stumble a lot more than I was supposed to in that exercise! Did you do that on purpose? LOL

babyrocky1 August 10th, 2005 05:31 PM

OOOOh I would love a spell check and yes I do I dooo know I need one, as for good grammer....it hampers the stream of conscienceSP? thing I got going on LOL!

CyberKitten August 10th, 2005 06:34 PM

Given that I type 50 mistakes a minute, a spell checker is a necessity for me. ;) I did find one to use with bulletin boards and it is on my desktop at home - this is my day off and I had to come in for mtgs, sighhh :yuck: - I'll post the url or the name of it later. I have not tried it yet tho so I cannot provide any reviews. I may have already noted it here tho so will do a search.

Prin August 10th, 2005 10:43 PM

You guys just need to post 4000 posts and hone your typing skills. The more you post the better you get. :D

Karin August 24th, 2005 08:51 PM

I have requested spell check before.

This would be a great gift to us. To all here.

Spoken from an old fart who prides herself on grammar but now needs a dictionary at hand and a magnifying glass.

There comes a time when education is thrown in the back seat and is not needed anymore.....or you just plain out forget that long ago class that drilled proper writing skills.

To me and the new people on the pets.ca block...this would be a plus..

I dare to speak for all.

marko August 24th, 2005 10:24 PM

We will DEFINITELY look into this - but there is board upgrade in the works and for technical reasons the spel chek is best added after that.

But we agree it would be very helpful and we're all for it.

Please remind us here or by pm if we take too long.

Thanks!

marko

Prin August 25th, 2005 12:42 AM

While we're waiting for the spel chek, can we get a troll filter? :D :D

southernlady October 29th, 2005 04:25 PM

Marco, if you are talking about going to vb3.5...the spell check only works for IE...leaves those of us who use FF out in the cold. The coders at vb.com didn't worry about fixing that feature for FF just IE.

I have one forum already on 3.5 and another just waiting on the portal to upgrade and then it goes to 3.5 (it's sitting at RC3) so I am very familiar with 3.5 already.

Also, I don't know if you've noticed but in FF, the smilies wander off the side of your text box. Liz

Joey.E.CockersMommy October 29th, 2005 08:10 PM

Hey you can't talk in code language! :D None of us will understand.

I actually think the problem lies within GH67 fb on the z67 web portal I believe this issue should be investigated at preciously 0900 hours to ensure the data processor is synchronised effectively. There beat that. :D

jesse's mommy October 29th, 2005 08:14 PM

Huh?

CyberKitten October 29th, 2005 08:45 PM

I am a terrible typist - and often my words come out looking like I never passed spelling, lol I have dled a variety of spell checkersv for forums 9inc the aforementioned by Liz) and find them wanting. What is unobtrussive - and can be used now by anyone, is Google's Desktop Seach Program. It adds a toolbar to your browser which will spellcheck any forms you fill - inlc these kind of fourms -. Now if I would just remember to use it, lol

Puppyluv October 29th, 2005 08:50 PM

Oooo I should use that Google program! I just keep a second window open in the background at google, type in any word I'm not sure about, and they give me the "Did you mean ________?" Which, of course I did, and now it's spelled correctly!

marko November 1st, 2005 10:37 AM

Sorry people - but Spel check IS coming...still.

We are upgrading various aspects of the site first - But spel check IS HIGH on the list once the upgrades are done.

thx for the paychents - lol

Thanks Marko,

Thats real considorite of you-lol

I have some firefox problems as well--some icons don't show well, and yes the thing with the smilies and post icons wandering off the right margin of the page. That seems pretty tolerable, but I don't quite understand why the icons don't show properly. That's annoying.

I have no intention of going back to IE, so chances are, you will not benefit from the use of spell check from me if it is only IE compatible.

Prin November 2nd, 2005 11:13 PM

I was gonna ask that the most popular smilies be moved more to the left and the rather less used ones more to the right (like the king and queen and especially the creepy clown)

Puppyluv November 2nd, 2005 11:20 PM

:clown: what's that prin? you don't like the clown? :clown: why not? I think it's just adorable :clown: (no not really.. I have to agree that it's pretty creepy  )

Prin November 2nd, 2005 11:28 PM

LOL LOL As soon as I saw that you posted I KNEW there would be clowns everywhere.

southernlady November 2nd, 2005 11:31 PM
I have some firefox problems as well--some icons don't show well, and yes the thing with the smilies and post icons wandering off the right margin of the page. That seems pretty tolerable,
That is curable...but it requires cutting the amount of smilies shown on the page down to 2-3 rows and no more than 15 (I'm talking to our admin here now). Plus the smaller ones need to be labeled 1's and the larger ones 2's. Liz

marko November 16th, 2005 09:49 AM

Spel check is one of the next things onthe list - I estimate it should be active within 2 weeks - hopefully sooner.

the spel chek will be compatible with firefox, IE and opera.

papillonmama November 16th, 2005 09:58 AM

Spell check is a good idea, how about a dictionary too for all of the short forms, for example, LOL, (which I do understand), but some other more obscure ones I can't name now because I just skip reading them because I have no idea what it means! :p
