Irr itated Eye

My 11 year old femal Dalmatian has had a very irritated looking eye for a very long time. I've taken her to the vet and a dog opthomologist. We've tried every drop, ointment and antibiotic to be used. Thought it was a tooth so we had it pulled. Tooth was bad but it didn't fix the problem. We've tried Rymidyl for the inflamation as well as oral antiboitics. Her third eyelid covers about 1/4 of her eye and the lower lid gapes and is inflamed constantly. All the tests which have been run seem to point away from cancer or other common problems. The only thing I have not done is a $1000 sonogram of the eye. I just don't think they will see anything. This problem has been going on and off for several years. It seems to clear up for a while but never totally. Does anyone have any ideas how to give this puppy more relief? Has anyone tried warm compresses? I'm at my whits end and I know she is very uncomfortable as well. Any and all input will be greatly apprecaited!!!
