Submissive peeing...

I am asking this question purely on curiosity because I have seen this behaviour ALOT with Golden Retrievers and if I ever get another (which I hope too soon) I would like to know how to fix the problem....

I've noticed this with two GR dogs..one was 1 and a half old and the other is only 5 mths old...But these dogs as soon as you go see them get very excited and immediately start to pee...I know this is a sign of submission but how do you get them to NOT do this in the house? I just want to know if this problem is fixable! (all the carpet in my house is white!!!!) Especially if the dog is very submissive disciplining with harsh tones seems to make it pee more!!! Yikes!

Thanks!!

Submissive urination is not breed specific, although it can be connected to BAD breeding of any breed. GRs should be outgoing and confident and dogs who are fearful and overly submissive should not be bred.

This is NOT a housetraining problem and a dog should never be corrected or scolded for it, as this is something they have no control over.

Here's a bunch of links on how to handle this problem: :)

There is also a quick pet tip on this site (Though not as complete as Lucky's link)

It may help.

I know that submissive urination is not breed specific, its just that I've seen on a few GR that were at rescues. I just haven't encountered this so much with another breed.... I think the popularity of the breed has been to its detriment. I also think the docile temperament makes it more prone to be on the submissive side then the dominant side...

Just my thoughts,

My Golden Blaze did pee when he was too excited when people came to the door or to see people. But it did stop as he got older and I don't believe it is because of bad breeding. Many puppies do it and grow out of it. It has nothing to do with him being fearful, socialization is not a problem he meets many people and loves them too much. :)
