Jungle Setup for Reptile

I am getting a new reptile today and set up its vivarium last night; I gave it a jungle theme. I’ve been collecting all the setup elements for about a month now and couldn’t wait to assemble all of it; my roommate and I assembled the top lid yesterday and I took a walk to collect some branches. Altogether, it was a fun experience. I’m going to go get the new family member this morning, meaning that I’ll have new pictures later today of the tank and it’s new occupant!

Meet Curtis, our newest member of the family; it’s a male standing day gecko. I was told he’s been at the pet store where I work for at least a year and my co-worker Joel was quite sad to see him leave since he’s been seeing him every day for months; I’ve only been working there two months but grew very attached to this little speedster. I took him home this morning and he seems to like his new house; he was nervous after an escape attempt (this little guy is pretty swift), but he’s tensed down now and is doing alright.

ohhhh how sweet!! are you sure its not a female?? is their "vents" the same as iguana's?

Vinss March 29th, 2010 03:04 PM

He's a male alright, he spends so much time in the window we can easily sex him by looking at his underside.

He's cute! Love the toe pads!

Frenchy March 29th, 2010 03:19 PM

Very cute :p how big is he ? (he's seems big in those pictures and I thought geckos were tiny ?)

Bina March 29th, 2010 03:40 PM

Totally cute. Geckos are all so good looking.
The set up is fantastic and will keep him busy and happy for a long time.
I'm just wondering if he might get tangled up in the piece of rope if he starts zipping around?
Maybe a thicker piece of rope would be less likely to tangle on him.
Also, the ends of the standing up sticks look a bit rough and pointy in places, it might be an idea to sand them smoother?
(I'm used to having salamanders and newts---they don't like rough stuff.)
Enjoy your new buddy.

He's about 10 inches long from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. He's also quite chubby.

Thanks, I'm not to scared he'll strangle as the rope isn't tightly bound and as he spends most of the time on glass surfaces. As for the pointy edges, I guess I should check that out, thanks for the heads up.

Vinss,he looks great,I love Geckos...there is one at our local Pet-Smart,I felt so sorry for him, because the employees did not care about him,I always had to tell them too give him water.
Now there is a girl working there who loves him and has totally fixed up his home:thumbs up
I got to hold him,he was very, very soft, did not think he would be.

Watch out not to scold them for nothing. Most of the geckos where I work don't see water if it's not in movement; we have to mist them twice a day so that they can lick the droplets running down their branches and glass; a water bowl is useless. Unless it's a land gecko (for example, a leopard gecko), then you're right to say so, they require water.
