Hard bumps on muzzle that come and go?

My 8 year old rough collie has been getting hard bumps on his muzzle that come and go. He's had this twice now. They don't last long at all. It sort of goes like this:
Day 1: Small bumps, hardly noticeable.
Day 2: Medium bumps, noticeable.
Day 3: Very large bums, very noticeable.
Day 4: Completely gone.

By the time we call the vet and get an appointment, the bumps are gone.

The bumps are under the skin, are hard but can be moved a little, don't discolour the skin and don't hurt (as far as I can tell).

At first I was thinking allergic reaction, but the bumps don't seem to be itchy and aren't red. He has also been on the same food for the past year and the same brand as long as I've had him. He's eating 5 1/2 cups of Innova Large-Breed Senior and the only treats he gets are from Blue Buffalo. I haven't introduced any new treats.

Anyone ever had to deal with this or know what it might be? The vet doesn't know because the bumps are always gone by the time we can get an appointment.

Insect bites are often the culprit when it comes to bumps so sounds like a possibility.

Does your dog wear a gentle leader that is rubbing on his muzzle?

Think you could get pics of the bumps next time they appear? The vet might find pics helpful in a diagnosis. It might be hard to get a good shot, especially if they aren't very large, but it might be worth a try.

Is it possible they could be hives?

He doesn't wear a gentle leader, just a collar.

I've tried to get pictures, but it's impossible. The bumps are skin coloured, so they don't show up. If I take a side shot, you can see that there is a bump under the hair, but not the bump itself. So far the bumps have only come on a Thursday or Friday, maybe next time they will come during the week so I can get him to the vet (not open on weekends and very busy).

I was thinking hives, but they don't seem to be itchy, and they aren't red. Though, I don't know if hives on dogs are red.

He was groomed a couple days ago. So maybe it's an allergic reaction to the soap the groomer used or a spray she may have put on him. He's had the bumps once before, and been to that groomer once before, but I don't remember if it was around the same time.

It could very well be an allergy to the spray the groomer used. Next time he goes in, ask her to skip the spray and/or change the shampoo used.

Our dogs don't always seem itchy when they have hives, either, and their hives don't look very red. Normally they just look like lumps under the hair and usually disappear as soon as the reaction is brought under control with Benadryl and/or steroids. Might not be a bad idea to ask the vet for the proper dosage of Benadryl for your dog and keep some on hand. Next time the lumps appear, try it, and if it works, the lumps are probably hives... Then you'll just need to pinpoint what it is he's allergic to... :o I know....easier said than done, but at least then you'll know it's an allergy you're looking for. :)
