Pug Entropian and luxating Patella
 

HI,
My Big Buddha has put on weight and no longer wants to go up OR DOWNSTAIRS. He can do it but it is obvious that he is having physical difficulty maneuvering (hard time balancing stairs and often slips), does not move much and walks slowly and stops often and I am concerned. I took him to the vet opthamologist today and she says that while he has pigmentary keratitis due to entropion she does not feel it is severe enough to be affecting his movement. She has suggested that we do however consider getting a bilateral medial canthoplasty to eliminate the entropions. She is actually concerned with his weight/lack of movement and thinks it could be due to his luxating Patella (Rear right leg). My question is has anyone (in the Montreal area) had experience with these two conditions or surgeries. I hate to put him through any surgery it and have thus far taken the wait and see approach but I feel something is definitely off. Any advice on this would be much appreciated- Yes he is on a diet we have reduced his food by 20%. Thanks.

Still wondering about entropion/eye surgery
 

Well, Took my boy to the specialist and he definitely needs surgery for the back patella without question. He is now having trouble going up any stairs at all and hesitates to go down as his back leg slips out.
Does anyone out there have some experience regarding the eye entropion /pigmentary keratitis conditions and the surgeries associated with it? Really unsure about whether/at what point operations are necessary.
Any advice would be really appreciated!

Sorry I can't help you out other than I have heard about entopion surgeries being successful, and they don't sound very complicated. I can't imagine having that happen to me, and would not think twice about getting that surgery done. The relief must be great.

How old is your dog? He sure is having a lot of troubles...poor guy. Have you informed the breeder of his troubles so they can consider these issues in future breedings?

Inherent traits
 

Thanks for your reply. Apparently when doing my research it never occurred to me, after many healthy years with my mixed breeds, that my purebred guy would wind up with two of the possible conditions listed. Not sure but my impression is even if you find a breeder who tests their dogs regularly there are inherent conditions in the lines, hence no guarantees. My boy is under two but still feeling lucky since the biggie is Pug Dog Encephalitis which is incurable.

As for the breeder, think they mentioned early on that with the breed this condition is always a possibility. So far have only discussed the eye issue with them (common to many brachycephalic breeds owing the scrunched up features).

There is no question for the leg surgery, he is no longer able to go down stairs without risk of falling!

A breeder can only improve their lines if they know about the issues that are running in their lines. Some lines just don't cross well. If a large percentage of pups are developing entropic eyes then the breeder should try altering their lines, if just a small percentage are, then the lines are good. Know what I mean?

Understand what you are saying, I have contacted the Breeder they are aware of my boy's conditions. They have been line breeding for a long time I imagine that many of the pups are from repeat breedings.
