checking for a microchip
maybe you all know this already, but I found out a way to "check" to see if a pet is microchipped, you can't read it, but until a vet/spca opens for you to get the animal scanned, this is a neat way. If you have a stud finder (real cheap at canadian tire) you can run it around the animals back/chest etc, it will pic up the little bit of metal in the animal to show there is a microchip, we tried it on brina and a friends dog and it works *L* odd.....but handy

What a great discovery!

it came in handy the other night when a dog was found, we discovered she had a microchip and ran her to the vets the next morning and traced the oweners

Good to know! Thx, Melinda!

cool
Hi,
I always wondered how these things worked, or how to know if a cat was chipped... I can try this on some feral cats I feed in my alley, just to be sure... Perhaps some of them ran away and are lost and their humans would be real happy to be reunited with them... Let the scanning begin! sandyrivers |
sandy, it will only show if there is a chip, obviously it doesn't read it, but at least then you'd be able to take the cat to the vets or spca (usually free at the vets and is free at the spca) to have the chip read if you find one

Melinda that is very cool and handy information to know. Obviously with stray/ferals if you can get close enough to use the stud finder it would let you know if it's worth the stress on the animal of trying to trap it or not. Amazing!

fabulous tip! Thx for sharing it. :goodvibes: And now I'll share it as well!

my strays
Hi,
Most of the stray cats I care for enjoy a nice belly rub once in a while, while the shy ones do allow me to pet them when I feed them, of course, some will stay wayyyy put until the food has been served and i am back in the house. Others are simply house cats who go outside and come enjoy the free buffet at my door! So I am curious about those also... I will be purchasing this device in the next few days and start using it ASAP. I would never try to get close to a cat who would not wish it, I usually leave it up to the cat to approach me or not, or put any stress on them what so ever. I am very curious to see if any of my strays are chipped! I will keep you all posted! sandyrivers |
