Explain HAM to me PLEASE!!
I like ham, but the ham I have had at other people's houses never taste like the ham I buy.
I usually buy those smoked ham balls that are rather compact and ok for slicing and cubing. I see those "pickled picnic shoulders" but I'm afraid to buy them because I don't like things pickled. The ham I usually have at other peoples houses is looser more like a roast, but still obviously cured/smoked, but nice and almost flakey in some areas. And I know you can buy ham with a bone and put it in the slow cooker with split peas to make a soup. What kinds of ham is that? |
Mmmm. ham.
I just bought one like you're asking about last week. It is from Sobeys and is called a "Cook's Spiral Ham". It has a bone ... it's the leg I think. 1.99/lb on sale this week! The compact ones are like deli meat... pressed (slimy, ick). I HATE those too. The spiral hams are already cut for you, you just have to cut them away from the bone. They are already cooked but you roast in oven on low heat (250?) for about 2 hours. In the last 1/2 hour you put on a glaze (maple syrup or honey or brown sugar based...) and you can put spices like cloves if you like. If you don't have Sobeys I would assume they are everywhere right now... they are big (mine was the smallest there at 7 lbs... ) but after they are roasted you can freeze the meat if you want. (cube and put in omelets or whatever) HTH |
Phoenix,I tried that one too, with the glaze it tastes great, actually even better than any I have tasted before.:thumbs up

[/QUOTE] You can either use a smoked picnic shoulder or if you want something smaller a smoked ham hock Though maybe I just have not looked around but I have never seen a pickled picnic shoulder , only just smoked ones |
