Weight loss and diarrhea in 9 year old male cat
 

Sylvester has gone from 19 lbs in February 2013 to 12 lbs in October 2013 with vet bills approaching one thousand dollars. Blood analysis, urinalysis, radiology, and surgery revealed nothing. In the last month there has been constant and severe diarrhea. A stool sample revealed the presence of parasites. He was given an antibiotic injection and five antibiotic pills. He was also prescribed Hills Prescription ID diet food which has not solved the diarrhea problem. Apart from the weight loss and diarrhea, he continues to be as frisky and playful as ever. What could be causing this problem? My four other cats have also eaten the Costo Kirland brand food and are perfectly healthy. Thanks.

Animals can get food allergies as they get older and some pets
can't eat the same food as the rest of their family . You could try feeding your cat another cat food and see if that help. You will need to do it slowly by adding a little new food to food the cat it now eating . Check out what ingredients are in the cat food you're using now and see if anything can cause diarrhea. Flax seeds are a lot pet foods and this will made a pet poop more.

What was the surgery he had?

What type of parasites? What were the antibiotics?

Not surprising, as these are the ingredients in I/D:

How any vet can actually think corn, rice, sawdust and by-products would benefit an obligate carnivore in any way really boggles the mind.

Inappropriate ingredients in food are very often the big culprit. Also, because poor quality, highly rendered chicken is so common in cat food, some cats eventually develop an intolerance to it. Have you tried feeding a novel protein wet food that doesn't contain any grains? ZiwiPeak venison or rabbit/lamb might be a good choice. Raw would be ideal though. Surgery was performed as vet (after blood analysis, urinalysis, radiology) suspected that there might be a blockage when cat was not eating. There was no blockage. When diarrhea became constant, second vet performed coproscopie (stool examination). Cat was then given an injection of duplocillin L.A. Cat was also prescribed 5 pills metronidazole 100mg. Hills prescription diet I/D has been fed to the cat since 1 October but diarrhea still present and no improvement. The Kirkland cat food that was recalled last year was not the same lot numbers that I was feeding to all five cats. Sylvester is the only one with the diarrhea problem. Apart from the diarrhea problem he appears normal. Great appetite, drinking water, and as playful and mischievous as ever. Thanks.
