Honey -> Drops Mouse but Eats Bird? <- WHY?

 the other day, Honey found a dead LARGE MOUSE (almost the size of my hand!! - 4.5 inches??! - length of a pen) in the backyard.

she picked it up and immediately dropped it. she tried it a couple of times.

I called her to stop, she looked at me but obeyed.

Now, earlier this year, Miss Smartie (aka Honey) found two birds on two separate occasions in the yard. she would NOT drop it. I had to shake it out of her mouth.

why, oh, why did she drop the mouse?

was it bc it died of an infection? what it still warm, recently dead?

me thinks, one of the two neighbours cats killed it and left it in our yard, yay.

my question - do dogs have some sort of scent that identifies a no-no eating animal vs one they could digest... i know it sounds dumb, but i cant figure out why she didnt go hay-wire for it...

It could be a number of things, I really don't know dogs well.
But if she didn't drop the birds when you said to earlier this year, and now dropped a mouse when you said to, could it be she's just listening to you now and not before?
