this is upsetting

Ok my pet.ca family. This just really upsets me.

I know some are against PETA...BUT,how on earth could they lie about this?

Ok,I'm having a blonde moment, but is THIS how they test pet food?

When you click on the link,go to your left and click on Video. It won't show you it,but it shows what is on it.

K my tummy is sick now.:(

I'm too chicken to look at the link, but I"ve long heard about abuses at IAMS.

The only way to hurt these big companies is in their profit list.

Don't buy IAMS, and write to them and tell them why.

TalonsMa March 18th, 2004 12:14 PM

I have tears in my eyes from watching that :( That is so cruel....oh my gosh...:(

mona_b March 18th, 2004 12:22 PM

LR,is this how all the pet food is tested or is it just Iams?

There is a radio dj that hubby knows. He has a beautiful St.Bernard Daisy that he forever brags about on the radio.LOL

He switched Daisy to Iams.I think I better email John this link.

I know he would be disgusted if he knew this.

LavenderRott March 18th, 2004 01:55 PM

OK, I just ate lunch, so I will skip the link.

I do know that Iams is garbage dog food. There is no way I would feed it to my dogs.

Carina March 18th, 2004 02:55 PM

Yep, I've seen that before. :(

Purina isn't any better btw. A person on my raw-feeding discussion list has a sanctuary for toy dogs. Most are saved from busted puppy mill operations, and test dogs from a Purina feeding lab.

amaruq March 18th, 2004 04:19 PM

ok watched and yes it was upsetting.

But there is something thats bothering in the video? I'm sure they didn't just let PETA film that?

I have heard repeatedly bad things about Purina..also about Purina and mystery meat. :P

mona_b March 18th, 2004 04:35 PM

amaruq, where you asking what was bothering in the video?

You had a question mark after. So I'm not quite sure.

It was a PETA investigater that went in undercover.

chico2 March 18th, 2004 05:11 PM

I did not watch, cannot handle things like that...I just bought a couple of cans beef IAM,because there was no beef available in my regular brand.Luckily my cats did not like it,the crows had a feast.

chico2 March 18th, 2004 05:15 PM

I actually think the more you look into these things, the more you'll be horrified, the same as other labs,slaughter-houses etc..and you are many times better off not knowing.
I was hoping these kind of institutions were regulated and controlled, but I guess I am wrong in believing a pet-food supplier would treat animals humanely.

Lets just say I am happy they didn't show a full video.

What they do have is pictures from the video and on the side of what was being done.

It's just SICK SICK SICK.

Here is a pic of Daisy the St.Bernard who was switched to Iams.I did email John about it.

amaruq March 18th, 2004 06:16 PM

Yea Mona i was wondering how they got the video? i kinda figured Iam's didn't just turn it over.

Did i tell you guys i tried giving raw chicken to the dogs? 2 of them kept throwing up. Course Garbage guts Lizzy loved it :P

mona_b March 18th, 2004 06:33 PM

It was clever undercover work.;)

Garbage Guts Lizzy.LMAO that's funny.

So the other 2 didn't like it...Hmmmmmm.

Catt31 March 18th, 2004 06:54 PM

OMG:mad: That was worse than watching the 6 o'clock news!

I often wonder about things like this on the internet....could it just be someone trying to sabbotage Iams? I never know what to believe..is there more support to back these claims?

It's almost like the child slavery issues around Kathy Lee Giffords shoe company or Nike shoe factories.....I don't want to believe everything I read, but I also don't want to bury my head in the sand and say "that could never happen".....if anyone has anymore links to more info...please share so I can learn more. If it is true, I will pass on that to everyone I know and will not ever buy Iams again!!

Amazing the sh!t people try to get away with!!! Disgusting!!!:(

chico2 March 18th, 2004 07:53 PM

I did not watch the video as I said before. But I wonder if it is proven to be correct, after all it is Peta who is involved.
I am tempted to send it to a writer friend of mine,a former Toronto Star column writer and Naturalist, also a 4 rescue dog owner who probably would find a way to write about it for one of the newspapers.
He is wonderful animal lover, not only cats and dogs but all animals, especially wolves and has travelled the world to help animals.
I guess I could send it to him and he can validate it himself.
Was the video made in the US? We have a plant here to in Mississauga, under IAMS Canada.

Karin March 18th, 2004 08:47 PM

As Chico2 stated I have not seen the video either. I question the authenticity of this article.

Considering it's source....

Iggette March 18th, 2004 10:38 PM

I am just sick about that site.....I had heard this discussion before on another message board and I just couldn't believe it was being done ( or just didn't want to believe people could be that cruel ) I also read the same thing about PETA whats up with that are they not an organization that helps animals????? if not what is there purpose????? I have loved animals all my life and have always taught my children when growing up to respect all living creatures. How can people do such a thing. I have learned alot about the cruelty to animals in the last 2 weeks .......more than I care to know, it all but consumes my thoughts lately.....saddens me alot...........................My hat goes off to all you people here that try every day to do the best you can to save these animals from what could be a bad situation or worse .....death......It must be so heart wrenching to do this every day and see so many that you just can't help.((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))......to all of you for what you do and the lives you save

mona_b March 18th, 2004 10:49 PM

It's in the states. The whole thing about Iams is from the states.Aparently Proctor and Gamble took it over from who ever owned it before.

Like I said before,it is not a full length video. It is different pics from the video.

Chico, the one in Mississauga,do they make the food there or do they just supply it?

The PETA investigators have been investigating this for 10 month.

Can you believe that when the investigators left, the lab director asked the vet techs to de bark all the dogs cause they were disturbing him.GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

And an Iams representative was touring the site at the time.

Just reading the main page made me sick.

Chico,I find it very hard not to believe any of this.

I got this link from another site....Even others know about what has been going on.
:(

Karin March 18th, 2004 11:01 PM

I still question this article. I do not know if this site will be able to help but it is one that I use to check out some rumors, www.snopes.com.

mona_b March 18th, 2004 11:20 PM

Ok guys,there is a video..

DON'T WATCH IT...........

Karin, have you read everything and seen the video?

People on the other site knew about all the doings with Iams before this link was posted.

So what does that tell you.

Did you read Carinas post about Purina?

PETA has been begging Iams Labratory to not do this type of research on dogs. There are other ways of doing it.

Luba March 18th, 2004 11:32 PM

I can't believe my eyes!! I'm disgusted, nautious and angered.

Mona, the video...OMG

I have nightmares after watching this stuff

PETA should do a public campaign on TV about this

chico2 March 18th, 2004 11:33 PM

I am not sure about the IAMS plant in Mississauga, what they do there, probably no testing..
but I am going to find out.
As for PETA,they are not all crazies, like that woman who wants to exterminate Pit-bulls.
They have alerted a lot of people about cruelties going on in Europe,Asia and other places.
Even Green Peace do some crazy things sometimes, but mostly with good intentions.

Lucky,I looked up Montreal Spca and they have several kittens/cats who have been mutilated the same way Chance was, there must be a monster out there on the streets of Montreal.

chico2 March 19th, 2004 08:04 PM

Sorry guys, but I tend to get very excited about issues involving cruelty to animals and sometimes it takes a sane person to get me to see the ugly truth.
My friend(sort of)Barry, the writer-naturalist-"activist",answered my e-mail and said he was swamped with wild-life issues and the inhumane treatment of "downers"on their way to slaughterhouses.
His organization is however very much aware of what goes on in Pet-Food labs, they even at one time had a"plant"in one of the labs, but they will in no way be associated with PETA.
Like he says,to find out whats good for our beloved pets, other unfortunate often X-pets have to test whats bad and that's the ugly truth about many of our products.
Also some"Humane"Societys and others have no qualms about selling healthy X-pets to labs for profit, money(they say)to help save more animals.

mona_b March 19th, 2004 08:18 PM

Just like a kid Luba, you tell them not to touch, they touch. You tell them not to look, they look.:p

I warned you.

Sickening isn't it?

Please tell me you didn't listen to it too? That made it all the worse hearing them.:(

Luba March 19th, 2004 10:27 PM

I know I tell myself no no no don't look
BUT then I need to remind myself of how blankity blank blank blank some of our human kind can be.

Karin March 19th, 2004 10:46 PM

I, do not trust Peta. So that is in the open. Am I allowed an opinion?
I have seen gut wrenching abuse towards animals in my time. As my sister calls it...I become a raging "Pit Bull" when it happens. No offsense to Pit Bull owners. This is her name for.

The storys I can tell.

I have to live with this as a constant reminder. Peta, in no way has anything to do with it...Society on the hand does.

There is no dumb ass vaccine.

Chany March 21st, 2004 03:03 PM

Now after seeing that I am once again glad that not only do I know what exactly goes in my dog's food but that I am not supporting these kind of companies. Thanks Iams for reassuring me that the natural diets are the only way to go !!!

melanie March 21st, 2004 04:07 PM

in past threads we have discussed the eco terrorist actions of PETA and most of us dont agree with their ways, but after seeing that i can totally relate to the anger and sadness that makes people and peta want to go out and rescue these dogs, take them home and cuddle them. i know if that was going on somewhere here and i know about it i certainly would not hesitate to try and free those animals (in a responsible manner, not just putting them on the street). i have gotten angry before over these sort of matters and have seriously considered this type of action. but this happens everywhere (you should see what goes on in university labs in australia, ha and we are supposed to have an ethics committee), i just dont understand what makes people do this, is it $$$$$$ or what?:( :( :( poor babies (tear)
