cat spraying

Thankfully this is not my cat, but my parents have had their female fixed cat for about 9 years. 2 years ago her brother dissappeared which they have been together since birth. (We are assuming he was hit by a car or snatched up) Since then any time a cat comes into the yard and she can see them from the house she sprays everything. Also if any animal comes into the house she sprays everything once they leave. Is there anything they can do to prevent this? She has sprayed a book shelf so much that the wood has warped and they now need a new one. Curtains are stained its really horrible. Anyone have any ideas?

This is a thin-skinned and easily stressed cat who has lost her lifetime companion. Other cats etc, make her anxious and insecure so she sprays to surround herself with her scent. This probably comforts her.

I would try using Rescue Remedy on her to calm her down. You can get this natural substance at health food stores.
