ThaiGhing November 11th, 2004, 11:19 AM Hey all, my 9 month old smooth hair chow chow has a bit of an upset tummy this morning.
Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to help him?? His stool is a little softer than normal, and he is eating grass (which he does when his tummy is upset), and he wants to be outside all the time (which he does when he thinks he has diarhea, or vomits).
He is still running around, playing, eating and drinking. Its only been since late last night that his stool was a little soft (not diahrea), and than again this morning when the grass eating started.
I feed him Nutra Naturals Large Breed Puppy food (both wet and dry). And we also give him a few tablespoons of all natural yoghurt every day.
Any suggestions you may have, I would appreciate it. I have spoken to the vet's office who advised me to bring Thai in tomorrow evening if this was still an issue.
Thanks
Copper'sMom November 11th, 2004, 11:28 AM I would wait till tomorrow just like the vet said unless it gets noticably worse. Observe how much he is eating, drinking and pooping....does it differ from his normal consumption? Has he been vomitting? Do you feed him table scraps?? My boy has a sensitive tummy so he doesn't get people food. He could have ingested something you don't know about and this could be his problem. It doesn't sound to major as you said he is happy and playing etc. Just watch for sudden changes.
Good luck and keep us posted!
mastifflover November 11th, 2004, 11:30 AM Get some pumpkin puree not pie filling just plain pumpkin it is great for tummy aches and diarreah. They usually eat it right up, I prefer this to giving meds.
ThaiGhing November 11th, 2004, 11:59 AM Hey there, thanks for the suggestion about pumpkin puree.... I am gonna go out this afternoon and get some for him.
Thai does not get any table scraps. He is eating and drinking and pooping regularily. I check his toys daily to make sure he hasnt been eating anything that he is not supposed to (or chewing something off and ingesting it).
As I am typing this he is in the middle of what we call a "puppy spaz"... he is running around the house... up and down on the furniture.... around the table.... down the hall ways... etc. When he gets like this, in the spazz stage.... you best just get out of his way... he is simply crazy beyond control... and its quite fun and amusing to watch. (plus he burns off his puppy energy). When the spazz is done.. he will simply just stop in his tracks.. and lay down... and sleep ...and SNORE! LOL
Well I am gonna keep an eye on him, make sure he is eating and drinking and watch his bowel movements... and try giving him the pumpkin puree... And I will keep you posted....
SSAC November 11th, 2004, 12:11 PM Obviously always see or atleast speak to a vet first............
If there's no chance of him "getting into" anything that would require vet care right away, fast him for 24 hours. Then give him very small but frequent meals of white rice and cooked chicken (no bones) or pick up cans of "Gastro" at your clinic. If no diarrhea or vomitus occurs, slowly start to mix his reg food in.
If diarrhea or vomitus comes back, see your vet asap and take a sample of his stool with you.
ThaiGhing November 11th, 2004, 02:20 PM Ok so Thai was running around playing and being his normal hyper self... but in the last hour or so, he has been sulking and lazing around. He has eaten today and done his poops.... but just now... he vomitted...nothing really came out... just foamy bile, with some of the grass he ate on our 11 am walk. I know this could just be cause his stomach is upset... But I am worried... We will be going to see the vet when my husband gets home in a few hours... As I am a worrywart mommy.... and dont want Thai to not feel well..... I will keep you posted as to how he is doing.. Thanks for being here.
Copper'sMom November 11th, 2004, 02:57 PM I'm sure you have nothing to worry about :) Dogs have their  days too! But it is always good to have them checked by the vet. Good Luck and don't stress yourself out to much!!
ThaiGhing November 11th, 2004, 07:12 PM We are just back from the vet, and glad to say Thai is fine. They did some blood work, an xray, and a bunch of other stuff.... And he is A-OK!
The vet said probably his tummy was just upset.... and that he seemed to be fine... playing (chasing the vet cats).. and wagging his tail.
I did go out this afternoon and got some pure pumpkin to help his tummy.... and guess what??? Thai does not like pumpkin, any suggestions now??? Of what I can add to pumpkin or mix in with it, so that he will eat it.???
Thanks for everyone sconcern
Copper'sMom November 12th, 2004, 10:13 AM Good to hear!!! If you don't mind me asking......how much was the vet bill?? I'm just wondering. Send me a pm if you'd like! Good to hear he is doing great. :thumbs up
mastifflover November 12th, 2004, 11:45 AM You can mix the pumpkin in with his food. I am so glad it was just a tummy ache. But keep the pumpin in mind because it is great when they have the runs or a little loose. I sometimes put the pumpkin on bread
ThaiGhing November 12th, 2004, 05:38 PM I am taking another stool sample to the vet... Thai still has the diahrea.... and even went in his crate today... ALL OVER the place... so i called the vet, she said to bring another stool sample.. and they will check it again for worms.... and see if that is the issue... wish us well...
