We got a kitten a few weeks ago,and things have been progressing forward. However, my dog is now afraid of my cat most times. He won't eat when the cat is in the house (he's a housecat), he doesn't like to play, he doesn't like to really be near him in general. they've played a little bit and CAN get along. i'm so scared for my dog. he's not eating, or drinking. the cat will go over to it to his bowl and start eating my dog's food, so we have to keep a watch out. tonight, we closed our bedroom for a hour while we were in there, and when we opened, both animals flew in, the cat under the bed and my dog cowering next to it, as if he had done something wrong. i picked him up and cradled him and he calmed down, but when i put him down, he was afraid again.

i'm scared, and i don't know what to do. i can't find any articles online about this, and it's worrying me. if anyone knows what i could do, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE respond.

higgsandgizzy,I think you need to keep your dog and cat in two separate rooms for 5-6 months.

Why that time frame?

Please elaborate. That sounds like an awfully long time to get intros done.

Are you able to put your kitten in a carrier to allow your dog to slowly go up to it without fear of an attack? Perhaps try to put your dog's favourite, healthy treats on the opposite side of the room and slowly place the treats closer to the carrier. If your dog is not food motivated, what about playing with favourite toys to distract the dog from focusing on the kitten?
