renegaderuby October 5th, 2011, 06:07 PM I'll try and make a long story short. (yeah, yeah...I know..this is ME we are talking about).;)
Posted an email to the vet, to ask about what treats I can give ruby that are "chewy" because she detests crunchy treats (raw carrots are the eception). I listed what we'd tried, and are giving her right now...and wasnt sure if the raw carrots were ok FOR HER (as kidney diabetes) ...
So I get an email back from staff saying, Dr. H wants to talk to you, do you have a best time we can reach you?
I send back the info and ask something wrong? I PANIC...because he's never asked to call me.
So...I'm waiting, and panicing. Cell phone rings, with private number. I USUALLY dont answer them. But seeing i was expecting a call from him , I guessed it was him. (it was).
He says. After reviewing her last test results (he wasnt there when they did them)..ruby can have whatever treats you'd give a normal dog, (perferably low salt for all of them)....and of course in moderation as with any treat and any dog. i was like really...why.
He EXCITEDLY said. I had to double check to make sure they got urine from the RIGHT DOG. Ruby is in the NORMAL RANGE for specific gravity (urine to water ratio).
Granted its bottom normal...but still ITS IN THE NORMAL RANGE!
I am ESTACTIC. (and so is he).
he normally dosent do phone calls, but with news like that..he wanted to tell me personally.
I AM SOOOOOOO HAPPY.
DID I MENTION I AM HAPPY!
considering her spec gravity was like 13 percent at the highest...and now its in the NORMAL RANGE....
And this is all on DIET because she didnt respond to medication.
The science diet kd may be "crappy" food to some....but it SAVED MY BABYS KIDNEYS and she is doing BEAUTIFLY>
I just wanted to share with everyone.
sorry if im a little OVER "happy" about it.
ps: dont you know ruby heard every word of that and is NOW "demanding" a marrow bone treat. LOL...stinker.
Rgeurts October 5th, 2011, 06:22 PM Awwww... RR, I'm SO happy for you!! :D :thumbs up :grouphug: :highfive:
I can only imagine how ecstatic you are (especially considering I've never had one of "those" calls, only the opposite :o). I hope she continues to improve and enjoys her "crunchy" treats! :D
Goldfields October 5th, 2011, 06:44 PM That's wonderful news, renegaderuby, no trouble imagining you doing a happy dance after you got off the phone. LOL. Such good news must be a massive relief to hear. :)
FWIW, I have 3 dogs on Science diet, two after bladder stone operations, one on the reducing diet and I think very highly of it. I might put old Perkins back on ...? ... JD, is it? The one for arthritic dogs. He had to go off it because they had trouble getting it into this country for a while, unfortunate because he was doiing real well on it.
renegaderuby October 5th, 2011, 07:15 PM regurts...its the crunchy she hates, the chewy she loves. LOL..i know confusing. But she will take a marrow bone treat if I squish it into a mushy mess. (weird..i know). BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH for the encouragement.
Goldfields:
I'm not sure which science diet your talking about it, as rubys KD is the first experience I've had with prescp food. But considering she went from a 13 to NORMAL RANGE, I'm singing it (AND GODS) praises.
I do believe different dogs benefit from different things. some happen to conincide with each other, and some are walking to the beat of another drum.
I'm happy that KD worked for my ruby. And Unless I see differently I will continue to belive IT (and GOD) helped her.
She's is my buddy, and I'm SO HAPPPY that she's pretty much a normal dog now. (with slight consideration..but no longer a "worry"). she's rebounded in just 8 months on it...so YES..I"m SO doing the HAPPY dance.
Rgeurts October 5th, 2011, 07:40 PM Ooop! Sorry, I misread that :o
I hope she enjoys her "squishy" treats  :D
Goldfields October 5th, 2011, 08:02 PM renegaderuby , Toby and Silk each had different types of bladder stones, so Toby is on the UD diet, Silk is on the CD or WD. I read somewhere that without these diets, 50% of dogs will have stones again within 3 years, however Toby's been on the UD for over 5 years I think now and he's fine. Yay!! I am glad the KD is working so well for you, always great to know in case anyone here has doubts about trying it.
pattymac October 5th, 2011, 08:15 PM That's great new!! I guess if the food works then keep using it. That's what I'm hoping for Coco's crystals. Everybody likes it too so if it works and keeps them out of the vet's office then all the better.

No prob! she does like ONE crunchy treat (besides the carrot, or squished up marrow bone)..buts its something I've not been able to find anymore. It was a biscuit that had crunchy outside, but squishy middle. It was oatmeal and apple and turkey (i know weird combo). It was in a green package and had good ??????? in the title. It was one of her favorites and smelled so good I even had a nibble (i hope im not the only idiot that has done something like that..lol). But I cant find them. I've googled, I've searched all the pet stores . i guess the maker stopped making them. I've not found another "crunchy" one she enjoys. sometimes she'll eat em..but....its more like..well if i have to.
Give her somethign chewy..and man she'll go wild.
Her favorite thing ever (which I'm very very sparingly on, even before her kidney diagnoses) was duck jerky wrapped around sweet potato. That was like the absolute (if I'd have put penut butter on it I think she'd have exploded with happiness).
the other dogs...they dont care. They'll eat anythign (not that id feed them anything..but you know what I mean).
WOW, that was a way long way to say no biggie on the misread. :p
opps...I take that back . Toby does NOT like carrots. but he'll eat lettuce (goof).

awww you got a toby. ME TOO! Man..that must get expensive everyone being on something different. We had to UP the kd bag size because "colby" sneaks into the bedroom (he knows how to open doors..how I dont know)..and gets some of ruby's food. We figured if we mixed a "little" in with his regular maybe he'd stop sneaking it. NOPE. now he's just treated to something different with his (vet said it wont hurt as long as he gets his regular too, and its more like a handful , so its just a treat).
Then all the other dogs learned from colby and started theiving too.
So everyone gets a little tiny handful on top of thier regular as a treat. Weird...but it keeps the thieving down some. But we had to bump up the size bag because her bag was going further and faster. LOL.
we got the biggest bag they have and it last (even with sharing it a bit) over five months. So...cant complain. If we had to actually FEED all our pups different diets...we'd go bonkers.
Hats off to ya...i know its gotta get crazy sometimes. I AM SO GLAD they are all doing good on thier diets though!
:D

Our little Toby is a darling. :) We call him our little soprano dog because of his yippy sheltie bark. Good name for a dog I reckon.
Sigh! It sure does get expensive. :( Still, those diet foods take all the worry away from the ones that had stones when you know they work. I'm about to complicate matters and put Matthew on Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Tuna as he, and his mother before him , were my itchy dogs. You can only try things and see how they react. I was pleased last night, when trying to find room in a cupboard for the Purina, to find a full bag of Gemma's RD dry food that I forgot I bought. Love those sorts of surprises. :D Pity they don't happen more often. I can understand you using Ruby's food as treats, mine all love these diet foods too. :)
marko October 6th, 2011, 08:53 AM Awesome news renegaderuby! :goodvibes: :goodvibes:
Melinda October 6th, 2011, 08:56 AM wow! what wonderful news and what a great vet you have to take the time to call you with the good news!!
hazelrunpack October 6th, 2011, 09:31 AM Yay, for Ruby! :highfive: That's great, RR!! What a relief that must be for you!
Dog Dancer October 6th, 2011, 10:11 AM RR, what great news to get from the vet. We're doing the happy dance with you!
renegaderuby October 6th, 2011, 02:40 PM THANK YOU EVERYONE. I wish ALL of us had "great" news. But so nice to feel "supported" during our "yay" moment.

Yes I think toby is a great name for a boy dog. Although it gets confusing around here because we also have a colby and colby and toby sound alot alike to dogs. (we didnt think about it until after we did it, and colby coming from a shelter was already "confused" we didnt want to try another one on him and confuse him more).
Plus all our dogs have an EEE sounding name. We didnt "start out" doing that on pourpase. But after two..we stuck with it. (guess we are kinda like the folks that have 19 kids all starting with j's).
But..fourtunatly colby and toby are the only that really SOUND alike..so they are the only ones that we have to really worry bout.
WHAT A GREAT SURPRISE YOU FOUND! love it when stuff like that happens. I found one today too. I make my own homemade laundry deterg...and I am not feeling to good today. I went in there to wash..and thought..oh crap I only have about three loads worth left. SO dont feel like making any right now (even though it only takes a few mins). So I opended up the cabinet to put the fab soft away..and saw a top of something peeking up at me. I was like..whats that. Come to find out it was a gallon jug of homemade that apparently I put up there and forgot about. I was like..THANK YOU GOD. lol.
so..totally understand being "excited" over little surprises.
(makes me want to go clean out my purses, I once found 100 bucks I'd forgot i had). LOL.
renegaderuby October 6th, 2011, 02:51 PM wow! what wonderful news and what a great vet you have to take the time to call you with the good news!!
Yes, I was totally "surprised" (but impressed) that he called me personally to tell me. I'm baking homemade penut butter cookies and taking them up there to the office for him and the entire staff sometime next week. I have to go find a cookie cutter in the shape of a dog treat or a paw or something "vet" appropriate. LOL.
