Cheap Pet Friendly Transit - Toronto to Montreal

Does anyone know of a cheap way to take a small dog on a trip from Toronto to Montreal? Greyhound doesn't allow dogs, neither does MegaBus, and ViaRail is expensive - plus I believe they require pets to go under the train, which we're not thrilled about.

Are there any other bus companies that are cheap but allow a small dog in a carrier?

Thanks! :-)

how small is the dog? I've often seen small dogs on the train, either in a carrier on a seat, or in the owners arms.

We are considering getting a female Min Pin, so would be around 9lbs. We are trying to figure out how easy it is to travel with a small dog. It looks like WestJet is about $100 return per person + pet fee, so flying may be an option in that price range!

Interesting that you've seen small dogs on the trains - I will have to look into this. I was under the impression that they couldn't be in the passenger compartment!

You are right, they are not, unless they are a service dog.

I just checked VIA Rail and they do allow small pets and rodents etc on their trains but they are kept in the baggage area and it is not air condiontoned only heated and the cage must be a rigid cage and a lock on it.. You can check it out here:

I also checked Go Train and this is what their policy indicates:

May I bring my pet on the GO Train or GO Bus?
We allow animals on board our trains and buses when they are in enclosed, secure containers that do not inconvenience other passengers. Containers are not needed for seeing-eye, hearing-ear, or special-needs dogs required by passengers for independent travel.

last summer (2010)on the train to kingston I sat behind a woman with a boston in a purse type carrier, I ended up asking if I could reach in to pet her......my eyes did not deceive me.......
