I think thats a great idea, a repeat idea but great non the less

Previous chat request (http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=6735&highlight=chat)

a section to go to live chat........now I can see the problems that might arise from instant reply's I guess what I'm trying to say is.........will this be a general, like Off topic chat........or are people going to be comming in the chat room panicing and expecting answers for an emergency question.

Would rules be implimented and who would monitor it as to not get real heated and name flinging etc.etc. you get the idea of basic concerns altho I presume from the last chat suggestion that the board moderators might have already discussed such matters.....yada yada yada chat would be good right now Im bein a chatter box.........lalala.......lol

Still researching it...not simple to implement...but it might be a good thing to have once weekly.

Has anyone seen or used one that they like? Has anyone seen one integrated with a bulletin board.

Thanks much,

Within the next couple of months we ARE going to implement a supervised once a week chatroom for people to chat in real time.

But what would everyone talk about? ;)

Thanks

On the other forum I moderate, there is a chat room open 24/7. It's EZboard, so is a little primitive, but does work fairly well.

The only problem is that anyone on the EZboard network can join, and sometimes we do get trolls. This is o.k. if one of the mods is on to boot them, but if no mod is there, the chatters are subjected to sometimes very nasty trolls.:(

Another board that I go to has chat, but it's regulated by the Admin. You need to have a certain amount of posts - they don't tell you that number - and then they will PM or email you with your password to enter. They do the same with PM's, so no random person can join and begin sending hateful messages to people.

I have 2 chat rooms setup 24/7. One is for my forum www.torontoaccords.com and the regulars hang out in the chat room while at work. I setup another one for my friends so we can chat while at work too. Its great for setting up meetings and asking other people. What it also does is reduce the amount of useless chatter on the forums.

Its a free for all forum and if anyone new comes in, they are welcomed and any of their answers are replied to right away if someone knows the answers. I will be willing to help out if needed. My hosting has tons of bandwidth which i never use.

It would be very nice to be able to have a conversation with some one in real time. Yesterday Mastifflover, Raingirl and I spent the entire day PMing about the same topic, with a chat rm we could've recieved/asked questions/replied and it wouldve only taken 10 minutes!!
In terms of probs having "nastys" on the site, they can be ignored then Banned later :p

Epicurious.com has a chat room affiliated with its Recipe Swap. It is very simply made though ( think it was done in perl) and not that secure. But a model like that PLUS registration would be good.

The chat program I use is phpMyChat which I have modified for additional functions. It doesn't use that much reasources and it has several irc type functions. What I like is the ability to use smilies, different rooms, global announcements, etc. I have tried other chat programs and find this to be the best one. It also stores messages in a database so you can view the previous conversations. I didn't like how anyone was able to do this before so I implemented a permission system so I can only give access to people I know and trust.

As many of you noticed, this week we tested a chat room.

We want it to be a nice add on and right now it it has some kinks
We hope to officially open a new bi-weekly chat ASAP

We'll update you just as soon as we iron out the bugs.

Thanks for you patience everyone.

Looks like we're scrapping the last chat room. Too many kinks.

We're trying out a new room, so thanks for your patience.

Does that mean it's going to be even longer before we see a chatroom??

Thanks for all the hard work getting this going for us Marko and Dave!!!

** suggestion... what about a posting limit before you can chat?... to try and avoid as many problems as possible with trolls, spammers etc...

Can we have a limit that you have to have posted on the board about 100 times before you can enter the chat???

Sorry on the wait...I'm anxious to get the chat up as well.

It was nice to chat with you all in 'real time' during those brief tests last week.

Not sure about the posting limit...Then you just get people posting useless stuff just to gain admission....maybe though...

Either way and especially at the beginning the chat will be fully moderated by yours truly and will only be open 2-3 times a week. Announcements will be made for all to see the times and topics.

Thank you Marko and Dave for all your hard work and working to give us what we want. You both are the best. :grouphug:

we could have a limit and just not tell anyone what it is. They will know when they've reached the limit simply because it will appear when the log on... that's what we have for PM's on another board that I visit. There is a set limit of posts, no one knows what it is, but when you've reached it your PM box opens.
