Dog just got fixed...QUESTIONS!

So our little girl just got fixed last Wednesday. It's been a week and one day. Several days ago she started getting hyper, wanting to play and run, just like her old self...NOT GOOD! She developed a small swelling on her tummy right under her stitches, it's probably the size of a walnut.
The vet without seeing her said it was from too much activity and that she needed to be caged for another three to five days! It's been three days and it hasn't gone away yet.

Has this same thing happened to anyone else? She still is eating and has a lot of energy still...no problems just this swelling!

noella had a bit of a swelling after her spay. Vet figured it was a bit of a reaction to the internal stitches so she gave her an antibiotic shot and a few days worth of metacam for pain. She never looked back. I'd take her in for sure!! Could be a couple of stitches didn't hold, you don't need her developing a hernia!

Oh Noella is a kitten so no chance of keeping her quiet once she got over the anaesthetic!

It could also be an allergic reaction to the type of thread they used for the sutures and you may want to look into getting some kind of antibiotic.

In any event, our Mollie was given Noroclav to avoid infection and it cleared up pretty quick. :thumbs up

Sounds like a suture reaction or the word I use all the time that I can't remember for the life of me right now, lol. It's a collection of fluid and blood that builds up between the layers of sutures. Over the course of a few weeks, the body will reabsorb it. It's like a hematoma, but that's not the word for it. My brain doesn't want to work right now :rolleyes: You can usually get Clavamox just to make sure a secondary infection doesn't build up, but usually the inflammation is sterile. You don't really need to do much else for it :) As long as it's a firm lump, firm = good in this case.

I think I'd still have the vet take a look if it doesn't resolve soon, CookieMomma. Are the stitches the dissolving kind or will she need them removed at some point? If the latter, it can probably wait till the appt to remove the stitches.

Hi CookieMomma. (It's me...MB) I don't know who your vet is and if you're happy with him or her that's great but if you're looking for another opinion let me know. Our previous vet was SOOO expensive and there were a lot of doctors in the practice. We loved one of them but not some of the others. Now we go to a doctor in Long Valley who is not only super great with the doggies, (very loving) he's also really reasonable !

I did have the same problem many years ago with my Chelsea. However the lump was the size of an orange. Rushed her to emergency vet and they basically said no problem, keep her quiet and crated most of the time. (Boy was tht hard) They also advised to go to my own vet after the holidays (it was Christmas) They also were not worried about her and it did go away when I kept her crated and leashed at all times. Boy that was a scare,so I know how you feel.
